  • Secondhand smoke levels in public building main entrances: Outdoor and indoor PM 2.5 assessment

    Xisca Sureda, José M Martínez-Sánchez et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2011

Indoor locations where smoking is banned are not completely free from SHS with levels similar to those obtained in the immediate entrances (outdoors) where smoking is allowed, indicating that SHS from outdoors settings drifts to adjacent indoors. These results warrant a revision of current smoke-free policies in particular outdoor settings

  • Two-year impact of the Spanish smoking law on exposure to secondhand smoke: Evidence of the failure of the ‘Spanish model’

María J López, Manel Nebot et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2011

Two years after the smoking law came into force, levels of SHS exposure in the workplace were significantly lower than before the law was implemented. Importantly, however, SHS levels were even higher than before the law was implemented in venues still allowing smoking. The data obtained in this study clearly show that the 'Spanish model' is not protecting the health of hospitality workers and that a complete ban is required. Furthermore, this st…

  • Influence of socioeconomic status on community-acquired pneumonia outcomes in elderly patients requiring hospitalization: A multicenter observational study

Open Access•Conchita Izquierdo, Manuel Oviedo de la Fuente et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2010

We measured socioeconomic status using both individual and community data and found no association between social class, educational level or municipality family income and the variables of pneumonia outcomes. The lack of differences between social classes supports the provision of universal, equitable health care by the public health system

  • Mortality attributable to passive smoking in Spain, 2002

    María J López, Mónica Pérez‐Ríos et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2007

Exposure to ETS at home and at work in Spain could be responsible for 1228-3237 of deaths from lung cancer and ischaemic heart disease. These data confirm that passive smoking is an important public health problem in Spain that needs urgent attention

  • European smokefree class competition: A measure to decrease smoking in youth

Reiner Hanewinkel, Gudrun Wiborg et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2007•Cited by: 1•References: 5

This letter corrects misleading and incorrect statements about the smokefree class competition (SFC) in a recent paper.1 Statement 1. “Modified versions of this competition should be developed, using ... group influence in a positive way. For instance, a non-smoking contest is being developed in Geneva using student’s creativity and peer support in the class” (p. 759)

  • Environmental tobacco smoke exposure in public places of European cities

Manel Nebot, María J López et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2005

Although there is some variability between cities, this study shows that tobacco smoke is present in most of the studied public places. The study also showed that in areas where smoking is prohibited, concentrations of nicotine are lower than in areas where smoking is allowed but they are not zero. The results of this study indicate that policies should be implemented that would effectively reduce levels of tobacco smoke in public areas

PARTICIPANTS: A representative stratified sample of the non-institutionalised population resident in Barcelona was obtained. This study refer…

  • Tuberculosis infection and disease among schoolchildren: The influence of the HIV epidemic and of other factors

    Joan R Villalbí, H Galdós-Tangüís et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1999•Cited by: 1•References: 6

BACKGROUND: The HIV/AIDS epidemic has caused an excess of tuberculosis cases in Spain and in other countries, but its impact on tuberculosis infection is less well understood. This study presents a massive screening undertaken to estimate the prevalence of tuberculous infection in a cohort of primary school entrants. The evolution of the risk of infection is studied by comparison with previous data in the same population. METHODS: Tuberculin skin…
