Tale of Mutual Recognition
This study examines the origins and reception of the Dialogue between the Caliph ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb and a Chinese Monk , one of the most intriguing interreligious dialogues of the early Abbasid period. Following a thorough examination of the manuscript tradition, the dialogue is presented in its first critical edition alongside a complete translation. Drawing on parallels between this text and Arabic literature from the eighth to eleventh centu…
Natif du Qatar puis moine syro-oriental (i…

From Amida to Famagusta via Cairo
This article is based on the analysis of two manuscripts in the Arabic language produced by the West Syrian scribe Yūsuf ibn Sbāṭ of Amida/Diyarbakır, in 1352 in Cairo and in 1358 in Famagusta, respectively. The former is one of the earliest complete and dated manuscripts written in Garshuni (Arabic in Syriac characters), whereas the latter is written in a fine, Arabic hand. By following Yūsuf across the eastern Mediterranean, this article seeks …
This brief note aims at contributing to the study of the reception of parabiblical narratives in hadith literature and Islamic historiography. Taking the Testament of Abraham as a case study, it sets out to analyse a particular literary motif shared by this text and an early version of the miʿrāǧ (Ascension) of the Prophet Muhammad. The comparative analysis demonstrates that the Testament of Abraham could have provided a number of elements for th…
