Islam, Secularism, and Nationalism in Modern Turkey. Who Is a Turk? * by Soner Cagaptay
This book is a study of how the Kemalist regime regarded and treated its minorities. The very large Kurdish minority presented the major problem, but there were also the substantial Jewish and the Christian Greek and Armenian communities, in addition to other mainly Muslim minorities, the Circassians, Albanians, Nusayris, Chechens and Arabs. Also studied are Kemalist attitudes towards, and treatment of, would-be immigrants of various religious an…

Historical Tradition in the Fourth Gospel
To distinguish between history and interpretation is difficult in all the gospels, and perhaps most difficult in the Fourth Gospel. In his sequel to The Interpretation of the Fourth Gospel, Dr Dodd attempts, with the historical question in mind, to discover the particular strain of common tradition on which the unknown author worked. This detailed study of St John's Gospel is in two parts. In the first Dr Dodd examines the narrative material - th…

The Interpretation of the Fourth Gospel
Some Johannine ‘Herrnworte’ with Parallels in the Synoptic Gospels
The question whether or not the Fourth Gospel is based upon the Synoptic Gospels has been discussed endlessly, and will no doubt continue to be discussed. The divergent conclusions which different critics draw from the same body of evidence (for it is seldom that really fresh evidence can be adduced) largely depend on their presuppositions. In particular, if the critic takes the view that the writings of the New Testament form a series of literar…
The Interpretation of the Fourth Gospel
Since its publication almost forty years ago, The Interpretation of the Fourth Gospel has established itself as a classic of biblical scholarship. Regarded as a seminal text in Johannine studies, it provides a comprehensive and authoritative exposition of the major elements and themes contained in this more original and fascinating of ancient documents. The author reconstructs the background and intellectual milieu out of which the Fourth Gospel …

The Fall of Jerusalem and the ‘Abomination of Desolation’
The Gospel according to Luke contains two passages which allude, with some particularity, to a forthcoming siege and destruction of Jerusalem; viz. XIX, 42–4, XXI, 20–4. The latter of these two passages (with which we may conveniently begin) stands in a context where Luke, to all appearance, is using the Gospel according to Mark as a source. The Marcan parallel to Luke XXI, 20–24 forms part of what is often called the ‘Synoptic Apocalypse’, or, m…
The mind of Paul
Judging from repetitious appearances of her marital arms in the painted line-endings, the Psalter-Hours John Rylands Library Latin MS 117 probably belonged to Jeanne of Flanders (c.1272–1333), daughter of Count Robert III of Flanders and in 1288 second wife to Enguerrand IV of Coucy. Yet the line-endings also contain some 1,800 diminutive painted escutcheons, many of which refer to other members of the local nobility active during the 1280s. This…
