Selling Black American beauty
Drawing on interviews with 20 millennial Black women in the U.S., embodied beauty knowledge becomes visible in local beauty supply stores. Study participants' repeated experiences searching for products within a minimally designed beauty retail environment revealed two perceptions of the beauty supply store as: 1) a site of cultural beauty consumption and creation, and 2) a shopping experience characterized by hyper-surveillance reinforced throug…

Existing reviews focus on issues affecting Black Americans or beauty standards, respectively. In comparison, this scoping review identifies studies that address both topics. The 39 selected publications revealed that hair, beauty standards, and body image were the most studied areas within Black American beauty. Studies were synthesized into three themes: (a) relationship to Eurocentric beauty standards, (b) community influence, and (c) intersect…

In the Downtown area, median Pb concentrations are ~63 mg/kg Pb, with high values of 278 mg/kg. For comparison, median Pb values in a nearby residential neighborhood (also …
Sustaining the Cherokee Family
The allotment policy carried out in Indian Territory from 1887 to 1934 divested tribes of their common landholdings despite treaty guarantees. While Angie Debo's And Still the Waters Run (1940) is the definitive text exposing the resulting “orgy of exploitation,” Rose Stremlau's Sustaining the Cherokee Family, a community study of three-dozen families in Chewey, Oklahoma, points out “that is not the whole story, at least not for Cherokees” (p. 5)…
Margaret Marsh and Wanda Ronner, The Fertility Doctor
John Rock is best known as the Roman Catholic gynaecologist who led the clinical trials of oral contraceptives in the 1950s and became the voice of lay persons who believed that the time had come for the Church to accept ‘the pill’ as a morally permissible alternative to the rhythm method during the middle 1960s, when Pope Paul VI created a special commission on population and the family. The optimism among liberals was dampened by the papal ency…
