(Wl-3103)-Caste Diversity in Corporate Boards and Social Values
In this study, we examine how caste affiliation among board members impacts corporate social values. To measure board diversity, we calculated a Blau Index based on caste affiliation. Our findings reveal a positive relationship between caste-based board diversity and corporate social values. Specifically, boards with greater caste diversity demonstrate a positive effect on corporate scores related to human rights, corporate social responsibility,…
Je Suis Charlie or the Fragility of the Republican Sacred
Following the Charlie Hebdo attacks, the demonstrations or "public mourning" of January 11th, 2015 were heralded by many as the return of the republican sacred, the re-crystallization of a long dormant people, and the resurrection of French fraternity en vivo. However, in the saturation of these political hagiographies, a series of trenchant critiques and observations quickly sought to deconstruct the meaning and putative symbolic power of Januar…
Rereading Charlie Hebdo
This chapter takes a more critical approach to Bruce Lincoln’s work, by interrogating the limits of his “irreverent” methodology itself. Focusing on the controversial Charlie Hebdo cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad and the response by Lincoln and Anthony Yu, this chapter argues that Lincoln perhaps failed to follow through with his own irreverent approach when he French Muslims against this sort of religious satire. Charlie Hebdo was ultimately fa…
Durkheim, the Durkheimians, and the Arts
Le peuple d'Orwell
Introduction
Fragments and fissures
On violence as the negativity of the Durkheimian
In this introductory article I contextualise, historically and theoretically, the rapport between Durkheimianism and violence. Telescoping Durkheimian theories of anomie, sacrifice and effervescence, I demonstrate how both Durkheim and Mauss, arguably the most prominent members of the French School of Sociology, found themselves constantly reflecting on violence in all its forms while never outlining an explicit theory of violence. Violence was t…
Festival, vacation, war
I trace the evolution of Roger Caillois' theories of paroxysm and festival and his early sense of the political somatic structure of the social organism. I attempt to systematise his category of the paroxysmic, a mutation of Durkheimian effervescence, and examine it in relationship to his theory of the sacred as a vertiginous space of order/disorder. I then carefully explore Caillois' phenomenological anthropology that narrates the decline of the…
