  • Building a New Identity in Segesta between Tradition and Innovation

Open Access•Monica De Cesare•CHAPTER•Locality and Agency in the Iron…•2026

This chapter illustrates and interprets the transformation of Segesta. More than any other Indigenous settlement in Sicily, this site was rapidly transformed in the span of about a century from a small community into a true polis, equal to its colonial Greek counterparts. The focus is on two of the three sacred areas of Segesta dating to Archaic and Classical periods, namely the sanctuary extra moenia of Contrada Mango and the sacred area of the …

  • Locality and Agency in the Iron Age Mediterranean

Open Access•Giulia Saltini Semerari, Beatriz Marín-Aguilera et al.•BOOK•Locality and Agency in the Iron…•2026

Against the background of the interest in ancient Mediterranean connectivity and globalization, the present volume examines local places and local communities. Monica De Cesare, Elisa Chiara Portale•CHAPTER•Akragas Dialogue•2020

The paper aims to reassess the entire architectural and archaeological evidence of the southern part of the sanctuary of Zeus Olympios. This includes the oikos near the SE corner of the big temple (with two building phases dated respectively to the mid-6th century and to the first half of the 5th century), and the area with a large pool and two halls located to the south. This is equipped with a complex drainage system connected with two big cist…

  • The Akragas Dialogue

Monica De Cesare, Elisa Chiara Portale et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Akragas Dialogue•2020

The papers of this volume focus on the sacred landscapes of ancient Sicily. Religious and cultural dimensions of Greek sanctuaries are assessed in light of the results of recent exacavations and new readings of literary sources. The material dimension of cult practices in ancient sanctuaries is the central issue of all contributions, with a focus on the findings from ancient Akragas. Great attention is also paid to past ritual activities, which a…
