The Kenya Rift Lakes: Modern and Ancient
The Turkana Basin
Mid-Pleistocene volcano-tectonic fragmentation of the Turkana-Suguta Megalake
The East African Rift System (EARS) is a key location for studying Plio-Pleistocene paleoclimate and hominin inhabitance. The region experienced profound reorganization during this interval as a response to volcanism, tectonics and climate change, and arguably detailed spatiotemporally coherent climate datasets could provide evidence of causal links between geologic change and hominin evolution. However, continued tectonism, erosion, burial and v…
Modern and Ancient Animal Traces in the Extreme Environments of Lake Magadi and Nasikie Engida, Kenya Rift Valley
Environmental dynamics during the onset of the Middle Stone Age in eastern Africa
The Middle Stone Age in Africa The Olorgesailie basin in the southern Kenya rift valley contains sediments dating back to 1.2 million years ago, preserving a long archaeological record of human activity and environmental conditions. Three papers present the oldest East African evidence of the Middle Stone Age (MSA) and elucidate the system of technology and behavior associated with the origin of Homo sapiens . Potts et al. present evidence for th…
Geochemical trends through time and lateral variability of diatom floras in the Pleistocene Olorgesailie Formation, southern Kenya Rift Valley
The Olorgesailie Formation (1.2–0.49 Ma) consists of fluvial and lacustrine rift sediments that have yielded abundant Acheulean artifacts and a fossil hominin ( Homo cf. erectus) . In testing prior understandings of the paleoenvironmental context, we define nine new geochemical zones. A Chemical Index of Alteration suggests increased catchment weathering during deposition of Members 1, 2, 7, 11, and 13. Biophile elements (Br, S) peak in M8–9 and …
The Geological History of Hong Kong
This paper presents a review of the 400-million-year geological history of Hong Kong as preserved in rocks exposed at the surface. These lithologies were formed during four major geophases. Terrestrial and marine environments are represented by rocks that were formed during Geophase 1 (416–161 million years ago). During Geophase 2 (180-140 million years ago), Hong Kong was characterised by explosive volcanic activity. The third Geophase (140–55 m…
