Where Are the Proxenoi?' Social Network Analysis, Connectivity and the Greek Poleis
The aim of this article is to establish a new basis for exploring the network of ancient Greek city-states during the Classical and Hellenistic periods by applying Social Network Analysis to the record of inscriptions recording grants of proxeny. Vox Populi, Vox Deorum? Athenian Document Reliefs and the Theologies of Public Inscription
This article argues that, by concentrating on a reading of the depictions of deities on the Athenian document reliefs as symbolic representations of states rather than as divinities, previous scholarly approaches to them have failed to explore the role they ascribe to the gods in collective decision-making and the exercise of public authority. The Anatomy of an Ancient Institution
This chapter develops a new model for understanding proxenia as an institution, as based on a shared paradigm of proxenos behaviour. It argues that the characteristic features of this paradigm were communicated in the stereotypical, formulaic language used to describe individuals named proxenoi. This chapter explores the symbolic aspect of proxenia in Greek interstate relations. It uses this institution as a case study to explore the functions performed by the wider system of inter-polis institutions, including asylia, syngeneia, and theōria. It builds on recent work applying the concept of peer-polity interaction to Greek institutional interrelations, and modern scholarship on Interstate Relations to argue that so much effort was invest…

Archias of Corinth
The traditional founder of Syracuse, Archias (active in the latter half of the eighth century BCE ), son of Euagetes, was remembered as a prominent individual in his native polis of Corinth, where he probably belonged to the ruling Bacchiad family.

Lyric poet, the traditional contemporary of Sappho, Alkaios (active ca. 600 BCE ) was born into a politically involved aristocratic family of Mytilene on Lesbos at a time when power there was hotly contested between rival cliques following the overthrow of the ruling clan, the Penthelidai (Arist. Pol . 1311b26, 29).
