Simangele Dlamini, Elizabeth Block et al.•ARTICLE•South African Geographical Journal•2023

This study used survey results to describe selected adult South Africans’ knowledge of and attitudes towards the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Results revealed that more females than males claimed to have been taught about the SDGs and that more young people than the elderly claimed to have adequate knowledge of the SDGs. Results also revealed that those with a high school education claimed not to have been taught about SDGs…

  • Winslow Homer and Women’s Bathing Practices in Eagle Head, Manchester, Massachusetts (High Tide)

    Elizabeth Block, Elizabeth L Block•ARTICLE•American Art•2018

Winslow Homer’s Eagle Head, Manchester, Massachusetts (High Tide) has been treated by art historians over the past fifty years as an unsettling and mysterious painting, one that does not meet expectations of a conventional seashore scene. Critics at the National Academy of Design’s spring 1870 exhibition reacted in a similar way when they objected to the overt depiction of women in wet bathing costumes and with undone hair. When the publishers of…

  • The Vigour of Prophecy

Elizabeth Block, Elisabeth Henry•ARTICLE•The Classical World•1991•Cited by: 6

Nothing in the Aeneid more evident to each generation of readers than the interaction of time levels throughout the poem s structure.Elisabeth Henry argues that the interrelation of these different levels of awareness in the narrative is a major subject of the poem. There are also national or collective memories, embodied in names or institutions, that Virgil links to the people and places of his legendary narrative. Thus, though Aeneas story is …

  • Catullus, Tibullus, Pervigilium Veneris

    Elizabeth Block, F W Cornish et al.•ARTICLE•The Classical World•1991•Cited by: 6

Catullus (84 54BCE) couples consummate poetic artistry with intensity of feeling. Tibullus (c. 54 19 BCE) proclaims love for Delia and Nemesis in elegy. The beautiful verse of the Pervigilium Veneris (fourth century CE?) celebrates a spring festival in honour of the goddess of love

  • Carmen 65 and the Arrangement of Catullus' Poetry

    Open Access•Elizabeth Block•ARTICLE•Ramus•1984•Cited by: 17•References: 11

While the metrical arrangement of the Catullan corpus has seemed to many scholars too artificial and inartistic to have been the poet's own choice, this opinion is now being challenged, in part because recent studies have shown that the collections could have been included in one roll, or Liber , and thus may be read as a single structure. Critics increasingly have sought the principles of organization in thematic correspondences or in the format…
