  • Tusk pairs in the Ziegler Reservoir mastodon (Mammut americanum) assemblage: Implications for site taphonomy and stratigraphy

    Open Access•Michael D Cherney, Daniel C Fisher et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2017

  • A woolly mammoth ( Mammuthus primigenius ) carcass from Maly Lyakhovsky Island (New Siberian Islands, Russian Federation)

    Open Access•Semyon E Grigoriev, Daniel C Fisher et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2017

A partial carcass of an adult woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) found in 2012 on Maly Lyakhovsky Island presents a new opportunity to retrieve associated anatomical, morphological, and life history data on this important component of Pleistocene biotas. In addition, we address hematological, histological, and microbiological issues that relate directly to quality of preservation. Recovered by staff from North-Eastern Federal University in Ya…

  • Disparate Perspectives on Evidence from the Cerutti Mastodon Site: A Reply to Braje et al

Haynes [2017 “The Cerutti Mastodon.” PaleoAmerica 3 (3): 196–199] criticizes numerous aspects of our analysis of the Cerutti Mastodon (CM) site, but central among his points is the claim that heavy equipment broke the bones and stones that we interpret as evidence of ancient human activity. This notion can be discounted primarily because most of the relevant CM fragments were found coated in thick crusts of pedogenic carbonate clearly showing tha…

  • Summary of the Snowmastodon Project Special Volume A high-elevation, multi-proxy biotic and environmental record of MIS 6–4 from the Ziegler Reservoir fossil site, Snowmass Village, Colorado, USA

    Open Access•Ian M Miller, Jeffrey S Pigati et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2014

In North America, terrestrial records of biodiversity and climate change that span Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage (MIS) 5 are rare. Where found, they provide insight into how the coupling of the ocean–atmosphere system is manifested in biotic and environmental records and how the biosphere responds to climate change. In 2010–2011, construction at Ziegler Reservoir near Snowmass Village, Colorado (USA) revealed a nearly continuous, lacustrine/wetland…

  • Taxonomic overview and tusk growth analyses of Ziegler Reservoir proboscideans

    Open Access•Daniel C Fisher, Michael D Cherney et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2014

At an altitude of 2705 m in the Colorado Rockies (USA), the Ziegler Reservoir fossil site gives a rare look at a high-elevation ecosystem from the late Pleistocene (especially MIS 5) of North America. Remains of more than four mammoths and about 35 mastodons dominate the macrofossil assemblage. Mammoth remains are attributed to Mammuthus columbi , and mastodon remains are referred to the well-known, continent-wide Mammut americanum . Mastodon rem…
