  • Natural and human-induced ecosystem change in SE Europe since AD 1700 derived from a partially varved sediment record from Lake Vouliagmeni (Greece)

    Open Access•Andreas Koutsodendris, Achim Brauer et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2023•References: 11

To reconstruct naturally and anthropogenically induced environmental change in SE Europe since the Little Ice Age, we have examined five partially varved sediment cores from coastal Lake Vouliagmeni, Greece. Our reconstructions are based on a multi-proxy approach including microfacies analysis, X-ray fluorescence core scanning, radionuclide dating ( 210 Pb, 137 Cs, and 241 Am), and palynological analysis (pollen, spores, and dinoflagellate cysts)…

  • Persistent, multi-sourced lead contamination in Central Europe since the Bronze Age recorded in the Füramoos peat bog, Germany

    Open Access•Oliver A Kern, Andreas Koutsodendris et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropocene•2021•References: 68

  • Late Plio-Pleistocene humidity fluctuations in the western Qaidam Basin (NE Tibetan Plateau) revealed by an integrated magnetic–palynological record from lacustrine sediments

Open Access•Christian Herb, Andreas Koutsodendris et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2015

Deciphering the climatic evolution of the Tibetan Plateau region during the Plio-Pleistocene is hampered by the lack of continuous archives and proxy datasets indicative of moisture availability. Here we assess the suitability of magnetic susceptibility (χ) measured on lacustrine sediments as a paleohydrological proxy based on material from drill core SG-1 (2.69–0.08 Ma) from the western Qaidam Basin. Our assessment is based on directly comparing…

  • Environmental implications of the magnetic record in Pleistocene lacustrine sediments of the Qaidam Basin, NE Tibetan Plateau

Christian Herb, Weilin Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2013

  • Volcanic ash layers illuminate the resilience of Neanderthals and early modern humans to natural hazards

Open Access•J J Lowe, John Lowe et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2012

Marked changes in human dispersal and development during the Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition have been attributed to massive volcanic eruption and/or severe climatic deterioration. We test this concept using records of volcanic ash layers of the Campanian Ignimbrite eruption dated to ca. 40,000 y ago (40 ka B.P.). The distribution of the Campanian Ignimbrite has been enhanced by the discovery of cryptotephra deposits (volcanic ash layers t…

  • The role of climate in the spread of modern humans into Europe

Open Access•Ulrich Müller, Ulrich C Müller et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Science Reviews•2011

  • Holocene seasonality changes in the central Mediterranean region reconstructed from the pollen sequences of Lake Accesa (Italy) and Tenaghi Philippon (Greece)

    Open Access•Odile Peyron, Goring et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2011•Cited by: 31•References: 27

This study presents pollen-based climate reconstructions of Holocene temperature and precipitation seasonality for two high-resolution pollen sequences from the central (Lake Accesa, central Italy) and eastern Mediterranean (Tenaghi Philippon, Greece) regions. The quantitative climate reconstruction uses multiple methods to provide an improved assessment of the uncertainties involved in palaeoclimate reconstructions. The multimethod approach comp…

  • Lateglacial and Holocene vegetation dynamics in the Aegean region

    Open Access•Ulrich Kotthoff, Ulrich Müller et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2008•Cited by: 12•References: 23

To elucidate the vegetation dynamics in the Aegean region during the last 20 kyr, we have studied terrestrial palynomorphs in marine core GeoTü SL152 (Mount Athos Basin, northern Aegean Sea) at centennial-scale (125 to 300 yr) resolution. The robust chronology of the core allows us to reliably date signals of short-term vegetation change in the Aegean region. For the Pleniglacial interval until ~14.6 kyr BP, our data document steppe vegetation, s…

  • Vegetation response to rapid climate change in Central Europe during the past 140,000 yr based on evidence from the Füramoos pollen record

    Open Access•Ulrich Müller, Ulrich C Müller et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2003

The response of Central European vegetation to rapid climate change during the late Quaternary period (Eemian to Holocene) is assessed by data from the new pollen record of Füramoos, southwestern Germany. This record represents the longest late Quaternary pollen record north of the Alps as currently known. Its high degree of completeness allows detailed correlations with Greenland ice cores and sea–surface temperature records from the North Atlan…
