  • The Lex Scantinia and the Public Response to Stuprum

    Open Access•Matthew Perry•ARTICLE•Eugesta•2024

The lex Scantinia was one of the earliest (and arguably one of the most infamous) laws criminalizing sexual misconduct in Roman society. Modern scholars know little about the specifics of the law itself, largely because all evidence for the law, the behaviors it prohibited, and any mechanisms for enforcement/punishment must be gleaned from a few scattered references appearing in a variety of literary sources. This paper examines the literary lega…

Matthew Perry, Matthew J Perry•CHAPTER•The Oxford Handbook of Greek and…•2020

This chapter examines the manumission and acculturation of freedpersons in the Roman world, especially through the lens of citizenship and community building. It analyses how the long-standing practice of granting citizenship to freed slaves shaped the institution of manumission in general as well as the specific factors contributing to the decision to manumit individual slaves. Results demonstrated that having a greater number of unconditional support providers was associated with a decrease in alcohol use from prearrest to postarrest. Having a greater number of directive support providers was as…

  • Gender, Manumission, and the Roman Freedwoman

    Open Access•Matthew Perry, Matthew J Perry•BOOK•Gender, Manumission, and the…•2013

Gender, Manumission, and the Roman Freedwoman examines the distinct problem posed by the manumission of female slaves in ancient Rome. The sexual identities of a female slave and a female citizen were fundamentally incompatible, as the former was principally defined by her sexual availability and the latter by her sexual integrity. Accordingly, those evaluating the manumission process needed to reconcile a woman's experiences as a slave with the …

  • Actor (accusator, petitor)

Open Access•Matthew Perry, Matthew J Perry•CHAPTER•The Encyclopedia of Ancient History•2012

Actor , accusator , and petitor were titles used in Roman law to describe the plaintiff or prosecutor in a court case. In both civil and criminal law, the actor drove the proceedings; he was responsible for initiating charges, obtaining and analyzing evidence, and even ensuring the defendant's attendance.
