Late glacial–Younger Dryas climate in interior Alaska as inferred from the isotope values of land snail shells
The isotope values of fossil snail shells can be important archives of climate. Here, we present the first carbon (δ 13 C) and oxygen (δ 18 O) isotope values of snail shells in interior Alaska to explore changes in vegetation and humidity through the late-glacial period. Snail shell δ 13 C values were relatively consistent through the late glacial. However, late-glacial shell δ 13 C values are 2.8‰ higher than those of modern shells. This offset …

Proleptic Apologia and William R. Johnson's Ordination Rhetoric
Attuning to a significant, yet understudied, thread of early 1970s gay rights advocacy, this essay analyzes William R. Johnson's ordination rhetoric. Johnson became the first openly gay individual to become ordained in a mainline denomination in the United States, and his rhetoric represents a landmark example of queer Christian advocacy. During his ordination process, Johnson used proleptic apologia to minimize his sexuality as he developed an a…
The Normal Heart and “sickly” body: The case of Matthew Bomer’s extreme weight loss
Actors often lose or gain weight to satisfy specific esthetics for their roles. When Matt Bomer reportedly lost forty pounds for The Normal Heart, public discourse went well beyond the typical explanation for the weight loss. That discourse explained Bomer’s body transformation as a part of his sacrificial duty to the gay community. Rhetors positioned Bomer’s weight loss as a sacrifice to educate, envision, and justify a united gay community that…
Coalitional Fronting and Shared Ethos Cultivation in the Case of the Council on Religion and the Homosexual
This essay investigates a critical moment of advocacy in San Francisco’s queer history: when police raided the Council on Religion and the Homosexual (CRH) New Year’s Day fundraiser. In response, CRH engaged in what I term coalitional fronting. The coalition’s privileged members acted as its public face, placing clergy, lawyers, and straight couples at center stage in its contestation with the police. Doing so allowed the group to cultivate privi…
Seeding subversion and the Christian reformed church’s study report on “homosexuality”
This essay develops and uses a critical lens of “seeding” to read the Christian Reformed Church’s 1973 report on “homosexuality.” Although the report maintains a seemingly conservative stance and has been used to marginalize GLBTQ people, it contains and promotes affirming beliefs about same-sex relationships that constitute the groundwork necessary to argue for denominational transformation. The report invites and empowers resistance against its…
Aminochronology and time averaging of Quaternary land snail assemblages from colluvial deposits in the Madeira Archipelago, Portugal
Understanding the properties of time averaging (age mixing) in a stratigraphic layer is essential for properly interpreting the paleofauna preserved in the geologic record. This work assesses the age and quantifies the scale and structure of time averaging of land snail-rich colluvial sediments from the Madeira Archipelago (Portugal) by dating individual shells using amino acid racemization calibrated with graphite-target and carbonate-target acc…
Until Death Do We (Queers) Part”: (Queer) Biblical Interpretation, (Invented) Truth, and Presumption in Controversies Concerning Biblical Characters’ Sexualities
This article analyzes the arguments for and against the existence of queer characters in the Bible. Situated in a larger debate about whether or not scripture condemns queerness, public arguments proclaiming the existence of queer biblical characters remain underexplored by queer rhetorical scholars. This article argues that the argumentative strategies made by people in response to the possibility of queer biblical characters mirrors how people …
Building Links Between Ecology and Paleontology Using Taphonomic Studies of Recent Vertebrate Communities
Excavations on the Roman temporary camps at the Three Bridges, Camelon, Falkirk
A series of small-scale excavations was carried out in the 1990s on an area of ditched enclosures some 500 m west of the Roman fort at Camelon. The complexity of perimeter ditches indicates the expansion and probable contraction of activity in the first and second centuries .A significant part of this activity was of a semi-industrial nature and may relate to the supply of the army over a wider region
