Large, climate-sensitive soil carbon stocks mapped with pedology-informed machine learning in the North Pacific coastal temperate rainforest
Accurate soil organic carbon (SOC) maps are needed to predict the terrestrial SOC feedback to climate change, one of the largest remaining uncertainties in Earth system modeling. Over the last decade, global scale models have produced varied predictions of the size and distribution of SOC stocks, ranging from 1000 to >3000 Pg of C within the top 1 m. Regional assessments may help validate or improve global maps because they can examine landscape …
The imprint of time on Canadian soil landscapes
Full-glacial paleosols in perennially frozen loess sequences, Klondike goldfields, Yukon Territory, Canada
Perennially frozen loess deposits in the Klondike goldfields include paleosols formed in full-glacial environments, correlated by Alaskan distal tephra with Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 2 and 4. Patterns of organic and inorganic carbon and clay distribution, microstructures, and profile morphologies indicate that soil formation occurred in a base-rich environment in which organic matter accreted predominantly as root detritus. At sites approximate…
Soil and sedimentary charcoal evidence for Holocene forest fires in an inland temperate rainforest, east-central British Columbia, Canada
Accelerator radiocarbon dating of 147 charcoal samples recovered from colluvial and alluvial fan deposits at 29 sites was used to reconstruct the Holocene fire history of an inland temperate rainforest watershed in east-central British Columbia (BC), Canada. Radiocarbon dates ranged from 182 to 9558 cal. yr BP, with prominent peaks in the probability distribution of calibrated dates at e. 7100, 3900, 2300, 1600 and 250-1000 cal. yr BP. The inferr…
