  • In Search of the Labyrinth

Nicoletta Momigliano•BOOK•In Search of the Labyrinth•2020

In Search of the Labyrinth explores the enduring cultural legacy of Minoan Crete by offering an overview of Minoan archaeology and modern responses to it in literature, the visual and performing arts, and other cultural practices. The focus is on the twentieth century, and on responses that involve a clear engagement with the material culture of Minoan Crete, not just with mythological narratives in Classical sources, as illustrated by the works …

This article presents the curatorial context of a newly discovered fragment of Minoan faience, now in the Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery (BCMAG), and the technological study conducted on this piece at the British Museum. It also discusses the British Museum study of comparable fragments, now in the Ashmolean Museum, belonging to the Town Mosaic from Knossos, an important and unique find brought to light during Sir Arthur Evans's excavations …

During this period, an international team undertook topographic, archaeological and geophysical surveys, together with artefact studies and analyses, aimed at determining the nature and extent of occupation at the site, and offering new data about the settlement history and material culture of this r…

  • Labyrinth Revisited. Rethinking 'Minoan' Archaeology

These findings suggest that co-occurring obesity and smoking is associated with substantial mental and physical health burden in U.S. veterans. Collectively, they underscore the importance of multicomponent interventions targeting, obesity, smoking, and co-occurring issues, such as trauma and internalizing disorders, in this population

  • Knossos 1902, 1905

    Open Access•Nicoletta Momigliano•ARTICLE•The Annual of the British School…•2000•References: 4

This article examines the Prepalatial and Protopalatial pottery deposits excavated by Evans and Mackenzie in the Room of the Jars of the Royal Pottery Stores at Knossos in 1902 and 1905. These deposits yielded abundant and unusual ceramic finds, illustrating aspects of storage and ceremonial activities in those periods. They also provide good stratigraphic evidence for the EM III, MM I A, and MM I B pottery sequence at Knossos

  • Knossos 1993

Open Access•Nicoletta Momigliano, David E Wilson•ARTICLE•The Annual of the British School…•1996•Cited by: 1

This report presents the results of excavations in 1993 in the area of the Early Houses and Early Paving by the South Front of the palace at Knossos. It adds to and further clarifies the results of earlier excavations in this area, and provides much-needed new evidence for the history of the Prepalatial and Protopalatial settlements. Principal findings of the 1993 investigation include (1) an EM II B pit deposit, which has important implications …

  • Excavations of 1987 on the south front of the palace at Knossos

Open Access•Nicoletta Momigliano, Sinclair Hood•ARTICLE•The Annual of the British School…•1994•References: 4

This report describes the excavation of two pits which had been dug into the natural rock, apparently in connection with the storage and perhaps original manufacture of plaster, in the space named after them the ‘Room of the Plaster Pits’. The pits were filled and covered in LM II, and the evidence for their date helps to bring the history of this part of the palace into clearer focus. The Room of the Plaster Pits may be the same as the elusive L…

  • Early Minoan and Middle Minoan pottery groups at Knossos

Open Access•Gerald Cadogan, Peter M Day et al.•ARTICLE•The Annual of the British School…•1993•References: 4

This paper is a summary of the results of a workshop held at Knossos in August 1992. The aims of the workshop were to examine the most coherent and reliable deposits, place them in a chronological sequence, and decide on common terminologies and definitions. This brief paper provides a framework and serves as a common introduction to various detailed studies of Knossian EM–MM pottery by the various authors which have appeared, are in press, or ar…

  • The ‘Proto-palatial façade’ at Knossos

Open Access•Nicoletta Momigliano•ARTICLE•The Annual of the British School…•1992

This paper presents an analysis of Evans' ‘Proto-palatial façade’ at Knossos, which casts doubts not only on the date but also on the very existence of such a façade, at least as envisaged by Evans. It is argued that Evans' ‘façade’ is composed of two distinct and unrelated sections. One, the N section, is a wall which can be assigned to the Pre-palatial period; the other, the S section, is probably just part of the paving of the West Court, and …

    Open Access•Nicoletta Momigliano•ARTICLE•The Annual of the British School…•1991•Cited by: 1•References: 6

This article is a critical reassessment of the major Knossian deposits assigned by Evans to the Middle Minoan I A phase. It is divided into three main sections: first, an introduction, in which the author discusses the development of the definition of Knossian MM IA pottery; second, a detailed discussion of each deposit, based upon a systematic and first-hand re-examination of the ceramic material, and of the relevant written sources; third, a di…
