  • Landscape development at Lina myr fen, Eastern Gotland, 9000−2500 cal. yr BP

    Open Access•Nichola A Strandberg, Aleftin Barliaev et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 9

Using diatoms, pollen, and geochemistry, we explore human habitation around Lina myr, Gotland, in relation to shore displacement. Archeological evidence has shown that Lina myr was an important area for its prehistoric human inhabitants. We investigate if and when Lina myr was connected to the sea and could therefore have been part of an inland water system useful for transport. A chronology was based on 14 C AMS dating of terrestrial macrofossil…

  • Climatic variability during the last millennium in Western Iceland from lake sediment records

    Open Access•Naomi Holmes, Peter G Langdon et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 21

The aim of this research was to create a decadal-scale terrestrial quantitative palaeoclimate record for NW Iceland from lake sediments for the last millennium. Geochemical, stable isotope and chironomid reconstructions were obtained from a lake sequence constrained by tephra deposits on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, western Iceland. Obtaining a quantitative record proved problematic, but the qualitative chironomid record showed clear trends associa…

  • Micro-XRF Studies of Sediment Cores

    Open Access•Ian W Croudace, R Guy Rothwell•BOOK•Micro-XRF Studies of Sediment Cores•2015

  • Investigating the maximum resolution of μXRF core scanners

    Open Access•Lisa Orme, Liam Reinhardt et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2015•References: 10

Micro x-ray fluorescence (μXRF) core scanning is capable of measuring the elemental composition of lake sediment at sub-millimetre resolution, but bioturbation and physical mixing may degrade environmental signals at such fine scales. The aim of this research is to determine the maximum possible resolution at which meaningful environmental signals may be reconstructed from lake sediments using this method. Sediment from a coastal lake in the Oute…

  • The Belgammel Ram, a Hellenistic-Roman Bronze Proembolion Found off the Coast of Libya

Open Access•Jonathan Adams, Jonathan R Adams et al.•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2013

The Belgammel Ram was found off the coast of Libya in 1964, and examined during 2008–9. The following techniques were used: surface non-contact digitizing using a laser scanner, reflectance transformation imaging using polynomial texture mapping and hemi-spherical harmonics, digital photogrammetry with dense surface modelling, structured light optical scanning, and X-ray fluorescence analysis. For internal structure the ram was examined by X-radi…

  • A chironomid-based reconstruction of summer temperatures in NW Iceland since AD 1650

    Open Access•Peter G Langdon, Chris Caseldine et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2011

Few studies currently exist that aim to validate a proxy chironomid-temperature reconstruction with instrumental temperature measurements. We used a reconstruction from a chironomid percentage abundance data set to produce quantitative summer temperature estimates since AD 1650 for NW Iceland through a transfer function approach, and validated the record against instrumental temperature measurements from Stykkishólmur in western Iceland. The core…

  • Geochemical and radiochronological evidence of North Sea storm surges in salt marsh cores from The Wash embayment (UK)

    Open Access•Konstantinos Tsompanoglou, Ian W Croudace et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2010•References: 2

The accumulation history of intertidal silty salt marsh sediments, from the northern shore of The Wash embayment (eastern UK), has been investigated along two cores, using a multiproxy approach involving visual logging, grain size measurements, as well as determination of particulate elements concentrations and 137 Cs, 210 Pb activities. The cores were collected in the high marsh area; one core was collected on the marsh platform, whilst the othe…

  • Itrax

Open Access•Ian W Croudace, Anders Rindby et al.•ARTICLE•Geological Society London Special…•2006

A new automated multi-function core scanning instrument, named ITRAX, has been developed that records optical, radiographic and elemental variations from sediment half cores up to 1.8 m long at a resolution as fine as 200 μm. An intense micro-X-ray beam focused through a flat capillary waveguide is used to irradiate samples to enable both X-radiography and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis. Data are acquired incrementally by advancing a split cor…

  • Sewage history in the anoxic sediments of the fjord Nordåsvannet, western Norway

    Open Access•Matthias Paetzel, Hans Schrader et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1994•References: 1

A combined study involving lamina counting, 210 Pb and the fallout- 137 Cs dating techniques were used to date two sediment cores with intact sediment-water interfaces from the anoxic fjord Nordåsvannet. Averaged sedimentation rates, determined from radiometric measurements, range from 0.4 to 2.1mm yr -1 over the core with a higher rate at the top. The available lamina data support the sedimentation rate estimates made from radiometric measuremen…

  • A Low Dilution, Wavelength‐dispersive X‐ray Fluorescence Procedure for the Analysis of Archaeological Rock Artefacts

    Open Access•Ian W Croudace, Olwen Williams‐Thorpe•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•1988•Cited by: 5•References: 12

A method is described for the analysis of archaeological rock artefacts which provides major and trace element data. Wavelength‐dispersive X‐ray fluorescence (WDXRF) analysis of 2:1 fusion beads permits the accurate and precise measurement of a wide range of elements. Accuracy and precision are nominally 1‐5% for elements having concentrations above 3 times the detection limit. The method requires a much smaller sample size than conventional WDXR…
