  • The Dark Years? Philosophy, Politics, and the Problem of Predictions

Brad Elliott Stone•ARTICLE•American Journal of Theology &…•2022

After the election of Donald J. Trump in 2016, there were many who thought of Richard Rorty's statement that “the nonsuburban electorate will decide that the system has failed and start looking around for a strongman to vote for.”1 Goodson explores the meaning of Rorty's prediction, leading to a greater discussion of the nature of predictions and the role of hope in predictive claims. The conclusion of the book offers a critique of Rorty's philos…

  • Prophetic Pragmatism and the Practices of Freedom: On Cornel West's Foucauldian Methodology

    Open Access•Brad Elliott Stone•ARTICLE•Foucault Studies•2011

This essay explores the Foucauldian influence on Cornel West’s prophetic pragmatism. Although West argues that Foucauldian methods are insufficient to deliver a philosophy of liberation, I argue that there is nothing in Foucault that would prohibit West from such a goal, even though a philosophy of liberation was not one of Foucault’s goals. Fortunately, one can understand West’s own project of liberation in terms of “practices of freedom,” allow…

  • The Down Low and the Sexuality of Race

    Open Access•Brad Elliott Stone•ARTICLE•Foucault Studies•2011

There has been much interest in the phenomenon called “the Down Low,” in which “otherwise heterosexual” African American men have sex with other black men. This essay explores the biopolitics at play in the media’s curiosity about the Down Low. The Down Low serves as a critical, transgressive heterotopia that reveals the codetermination of racism, sexism, and heterosexism in black male sexuality

  • Subjectivity and truth

    Open Access•Brad Elliott Stone•CHAPTER•Michel Foucault•2010

Is there a relationship between subjectivity and truth in our contemporary age? Foucault's answer is “no”. In this chapter, I seek to explicate Foucault's conclusion about the divorce of subjectivity and truth. Beginning with Foucault's account of the shift between ancient and modern philosophy, I show in the first section that the modern, strictly epistemological understanding of truth removes us from the possibility of having an ethical relatio…

Michel Foucault's work on freedom, subjectivity and power is now central to thinking across an extraordinarily wide range of disciplines, including philosophy, history, psychology, politics, anthropology, sociology and criminology. Michel Foucault: Key Concepts explores Foucault s central ideas, such as disciplinary power, biopower, bodies, spirituality, and practices of the self. Each essay focuses on a specific concept, analyzing its meaning an…

Foucault's lecture notes (although the notes were sometimes consulted); rather, they are transcriptions from audio tapes recorded by students of Foucault. 3However, contrary to the editors' intentions, serious Foucauldians would remind them that Foucault does mention the transcription of public addresses as part of the oeuvre process:[D]oes the name of an author designate in the same way a text that he has published under his name, a text that he…
