The Riddles in Martius Valerius
The bucolic poet Martius Valerius used to be dated to the twelfth century, but has now been securely assigned to the sixth; articles on his work should therefore be published in journals not of medieval, but of classical philology. The present brief contribution proposes a new solution to the two riddles that Martius, following the example of Virgil, included at the end of his third eclogue. These solutions are then put into the context of the co…
The intellectual and social world of Martius Valerius
The bucolic poems of Martius Valerius, first published in 1946, used to be dated to the twelfth century, but thanks to the work of François Dolbeau and Justin Stover, they are now securely dated to the sixth. In this article, I demonstrate that Martius’ fourth eclogue draws extensively on two of the logical works of Boethius, the introduction to the second edition of the commentary on Porphyry's Isagoge and the translation of Aristotle's Peri her…
In Praise of Meliboeus
In discussion over the dating of the Bucolics of Calpurnius Siculus, an important role has always been played by attempts to identify the character of Meliboeus, who is to be read as a bucolic allegory of the poet's patron. By providing a new interpretation of the description of Meliboeus’ literary production, I argue that he must be the agricultural writer Columella. A consideration of other aspects of Meliboeus confirms this identification, as …

Catullus 63 in a Roman Context
In this paper,1) Catullus’ intentions in writing the Attis poem and his possible use of a Greek model are deliberately left out of account. Instead, the focus is on the meaning his poem may have had for his contemporary audience. Attis is a gallus, a castrated devotee of the Mater Magna, and thus a reconstruction is attempted of the mental picture that Romans of Catullus’ time had of galli. Special importance is given to Lucretius’ excursus on th…
