  • Paths in the eastern Congo rainforest

Open Access•Birgit Ricquier, Laurent Nieblas Ramírez et al.•ARTICLE•Afriques•2023•References: 9

The early history of the lower Lualaba, the region between Kisangani and Lowa, is mostly known from Moeller’s Les grandes lignes des migrations des Bantous de la Province Orientale du Congo belge (1936). This work is largely based on vernacular histories collected and reinterpreted by various colonial administrators. Here, we present recently recorded vernacular histories and a reanalysis of relevant documents from the AIMO colonial archives. The…

  • Language and Archeology

    Open Access•Birgit Ricquier•OTHER•The International Encyclopedia of…•2020

Languages inform us about early ancestors, past contact situations, and innovations. Through language classification, it is possible to trace proto‐speech communities in time and in space. The “Words‐and‐Things” approach allows for insights into the material and sociocultural life of these proto‐speech communities. In order to investigate the causes of language dispersals, linguistic results are usually linked to data from other disciplines, such…

  • The History of Porridge in Bantuphone Africa, with Words as Main Ingredients

    Open Access•Birgit Ricquier•ARTICLE•Afriques•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 11

The historical comparative-linguistic analysis of Bantu culinary vocabulary reveals that the stiff porridge widely consumed in Central and Southern Africa today as principal starch food was already known to the first Bantu speech communities. The preparation method changed over time. The early Bantu speakers prepared porridge as a mash from yams and later from plantains. The Proto-East and Proto-Southwest Bantu speech communities knew cereals and…

  • Resolving phonological variability in Bantu lexical reconstructions
