  • Do management practices matter in further education

Open Access•Sandra McNally, Luis Schmidt et al.•ARTICLE•Economica•2024•References: 20

Further education and sixth form colleges are key institutions for facilitating skill acquisition among 16–19 year olds in the UK. They enrol half a school cohort after completion of their lower secondary education, and this includes a disproportionate number from low‐income backgrounds. Yet little is known about what could improve performance in these institutions. We conduct the world's first management practices survey in such institutions, an…

  • Do Apprenticeships Pay? Evidence for England

Open Access•Chiara Cavaglia, Sandra McNally et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Bulletin of Economics and…•2020

The importance of apprenticeships for early labour market transitions varies across countries and over time. In recent times, there has been a policy drive to increase the number of people undertaking apprenticeships in England. This is regarded as important for addressing poor productivity. We investigate whether there is a positive return to undertaking an apprenticeship for young people. We use detailed administrative data to track recent coho…

  • Universal Pre‐school Education

Open Access•Jo Blanden, Emilia Del Bono et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2016•Cited by: 14•References: 25

This article studies the effect of free pre‐school education on child outcomes in primary school. We exploit the staggered implementation of free part‐time pre‐school for three year olds across Local Education Authorities in England in the early 2000s. The policy led to small improvements in attainment at age 5, with no apparent benefits by age 11. We argue that this is because the expansion of free places largely crowded out privately paid care,…

    Open Access•Stephen Machin, Sandra McNally et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2007•Cited by: 10•References: 9

Despite its high relevance to current policy debates, estimating the causal effect of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) investment on educational standards remains fraught with difficulties. We exploit a change in the rules governing ICT funding across different school districts of England to devise an Instrumental Variable strategy to identify the causal impact of ICT expenditure on pupil outcomes. The approach identifies the effect…

  • Natural cognitive coping strategies in schizophrenia

Open Access•Sandra McNally, Sandra E McNally et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Medical…•1997•Cited by: 4

Recent attention has focused on cognitive‐behavioural treatment (CBT) for psychotic thinking. These interventions may be especially appropriate for drug‐resistant patients or as an adjunct to pharmacotherapy. However, CBT for schizophrenia was developed in the absence of any systematic investigation of personal self‐statements that psychotic individuals develop on their own. The current investigation explored the natural cognitive strategies of 1…

  • Socialization and Mothers' and Adolescents' Empathy-Related Characteristics

Nancy Eisenberg, Sandra McNally•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Adolescence•1993•Cited by: 7•References: 9

The primary purpose of this study was to examine the relations of maternal childrearing practices over an 8-year period to adolescents' sympathy, personal distress, and cognitive perspective-taking. In addition, the relations of maternal empathy-related characteristics to children's empathy-related characteristics and to their own childrearing practices were assessed. Maternal practices were assessed with a Q-sort on five occasions, each 2 years …
