  • Health Risk Assessment in Southern Carpathians Small Rural Communities Using Karst Springs as a Drinking Water Source

Open Access•Ana Moldovan, Anamaria Iulia Török et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

The chemical quality of waters from eight karst springs from the Southern Carpathians and the health risk of small rural communities using these springs as a drinking water source were assessed. The results indicated that the spring waters in the studied area are chemically suitable to be used as drinking water and pose no health risks for adults and children. The spring water can be generally described as having circumneutral pH, Ca-Mg-HCO 3 - f…

  • Ancient human footprints in C iur‐ I zbuc C ave, R omania

Open Access•David Webb, Marius Robu et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 26

In 1965, Ciur‐Izbuc Cave in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania was discovered to contain about 400 ancient human footprints. At that time, researchers interpreted the footprints to be those of a man, woman and child who entered the cave by an opening which is now blocked but which was usable in antiquity. The age of the prints (≈10–15 ka BP) was based partly on their association with cave bear ( Ursus spelaeus ) footprints and bones, and the bel…

  • Peştera cu Oase 2 and the cranial morphology of early modern Europeans

Open Access•Hélène Rougier, Ştefan Milota et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2007

Between 2003 and 2005, the Peştera cu Oase, Romania yielded a largely complete early modern human cranium, Oase 2, scattered on the surface of a Late Pleistocene hydraulically displaced bone bed containing principally the remains of Ursus spelaeus . Multiple lines of evidence indicate an age of ≈40.5 thousand calendar years before the present (≈35 ka 14 C B.P.). Morphological comparison of the adolescent Oase 2 cranium to relevant Late Pleistocen…

  • An early modern human from the Peştera cu Oase, Romania

Open Access•E Trinkaus, Oana Moldovan et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the National…•2003

The 2002 discovery of a robust modern human mandible in the Peştera cu Oase, southwestern Romania, provides evidence of early modern humans in the lower Danubian Corridor. Directly accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon ( 14 C)-dated to 34,000–36,000 14 C years B.P., the Oase 1 mandible is the oldest definite early modern human specimen in Europe and provides perspectives on the emergence and evolution of early modern humans in the northwester…
