Crime and justice research 2023
This compendium brings together 20 recent studies published by the Australian Institute of Criminology. Each chapter relates to one of the Institute’s research priorities: Indigenous over-representation in the criminal justice system, transnational serious and organised crime, domestic and family violence, sexual violence, online sexual exploitation of children, and cybercrime. Together, these studies provide insight into our work on these topics…
Criminal histories of Australian organised crime offenders
This study analyses the criminal histories of Australian organised crime offenders. Most offenders associated with organised crime groups did not commit their first offence until adulthood; nearly one-third were aged 25 years or older when they committed their first offence. Offending was most common, and remained relatively stable, throughout their 20s and early 30s. Offending frequency gradually increased during this period, as did the seriousn…
International and Transnational Crime and Justice
International crime and justice is an emerging field that covers crime and justice from a global perspective. This book introduces the nature of international and transnational crimes, theoretical foundations to understanding the relationship between social change and the waxing and waning of the crime opportunity structure, globalization, migration, culture conflicts, and the emerging legal frameworks for their prevention and control. It present…
Exploring the relationship between organised crime and volume crime
Volume crimes such as burglary, theft, criminal damage, drug possession, assault and fraud are often treated in popular discourse as a separate category of criminal behaviour to crimes committed by organised criminal groups. Yet in reality there is considerable overlap, with organised criminal groups involved in various forms of volume crime. As part of a program of work investigating the criminal histories of members of organised criminal groups…
What is the profile of child exploitation material offenders?
Child exploitation material (CEM) is sexually abusive images of children that are typically disseminated via the internet. This paper reviews recent literature to establish a profile of those who view or collect CEM. CEM offenders are predominantly male, white, with an average age of between 35 and 45 and they are often single. They also tend to be better educated and are more likely to work in professional occupations than other sexual offenders…
Explaining the property crime drop: The offender perspective
For more than a decade, Australia has witnessed a sustained reduction in property crime. Yet relatively little is known about what may have caused this decline. This study aimed to explore plausible explanations for the property crime drop by ‘going to the source’ and interviewing a sample of 994 police detainees as part of the Drug Use Monitoring in Australia (DUMA) Program. The results showed that less than half of police detainees were able to…
Determinants of complainant satisfaction with agency responses to anti-social behaviour
Persecuting Alex Rodriguez: Race, money and the ethics of reporting the performance-enhancing drug scandal
This qualitative textual analysis considers the US press coverage of Alex Rodriguez for his alleged use of performance-enhancing drugs. It evaluates nearly 500 newspaper, magazine and broadcast reports from 2007 to 2014 on Rodriguez, as well as reader and journalistic responses, and finds issues of overt and inferential racism, stereotyping and symbolic impurity, and a crude emphasis on money in the coverage. This research considers the ethics of…
Regulating crime prevention design into consumer products: Learning the lessons from electronic vehicle immobilisation
Despite significant reductions in recent years, acquisitive property crime remains the single largest crime category, with over 700,000 offences recorded annually by police in Australia. There is potential to further reduce the scale of such offending and the subsequent costs to society by focusing attention on the design of frequently stolen consumer products in order to reduce their vulnerability to theft. While there is a variety of ways of en…
When intervention is a load of rubbish: Evaluating the impact of ‘clean-up’ operations
International Crime and Justice
International crime and justice is an emerging field that covers international and transnational crimes that have not been the focus of mainstream criminology or criminal justice. This book examines the field from a global perspective. It provides an introduction to the nature of international and transnational crimes and the theoretical perspectives that assist in understanding the relationship between social change and the waxing and waning of …
International Trafficking in Stolen Vehicles
For many years, trafficking in stolen cars seemed largely to be confined to the Americas, with an estimated 200,000 cars per year flowing from the United States to Mexico and Central and South America. Trafficking in stolen cars is now a worldwide phenomenon. Perhaps half a million or more cars each year are transported from developed to less developed nations, hidden in containers or driven across national borders. Because vehicle trafficking ca…
