  • Pseudo-Basil’s Against Eunomius and Cappadocian Theology

    Claudio Moreschini•ARTICLE•Sacris Erudiri•2020

Among the Pseudo-Basiliana there is a treatise, which in the manuscript tradition is merged with Basil’s Contra Eunomium, of which it constitutes the fourth and fifth books. It is usually believed to have been written before 360 ad, probably by Apollinaris of Laodicea. In my opinion, however, the author of the work polemicizes with Eunomius not through the doctrines of Apollinaris, but through the Trinitarian theology of the Cappadocians, and the…

  • The Interpretation of the Sacrament of the Eucharist as Palingenesis According to Foix-Candale

    Claudio Moreschini•ARTICLE•Gnosis•2018

By means of a dialogue between Hermes, also known as Mercury, and his son Tat, the thirteenth treatise of the Corpus Hermeticum explains how Hermes learned from God what is meant by “palingenesis,” usually translated as “rebirth,” and how, in the aftermath of this explanation, Tat’s soul was transformed. In his lengthy commentary on this treatise, the sixteenth-century Christian Hermetist François Foix-Candale interprets the Hermetic palingenesis…

  • Boethius

    Open Access•Claudio Moreschini•CHAPTER•The Encyclopedia of Ancient History•2012

Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius (the manuscripts often add, erroneously, Torquatus to Manlius to connect him to the hero who defeated the Gauls; the gens Manlia was extinguished at the end of the republic, but Manlius was a common name of some noble families in the imperial age) was born about 480, son of Manlius Boethius, consul of 487; his mother was a member of the Anicii, a prominent senatorial Christian family.

  • In Platonis Phaedrum Scholia

Alexandrinus Hermias, Hermeias of Alexandria et al.•BOOK•In Platonis Phaedrum scholia•2012

"In the 5th century AD Hermias of Alexandria, a pupil of the Athenian Academy, wrote a commentary on Plato’s dialogue Phaidros. The commentary concentrateson the explanation of metaphysical contexts, and so illuminates the ideas and theories of the Neoplatonist school. This volume replaces the only previous critical edition (P. Couvreur, 1901), and includes comprehensive indices."

  • Hermes Christianus

    Claudio Moreschini•BOOK•Hermes Christianus•2011

"Hermetic theosophy, originally an offspring of Egyptian religion, spread throughout the ancient world from the Hellenistic age onwards and was welcomed by Christianity in Late Antiquity. Cultivated people in a Christian milieu were convinced that Hermetic piety and religion were the preparation, expressed by heathen imagery, of their own faith: Hermes, a wise and pious philosopher in Egypt in the time of Moses, received (so it was thought) the s…

  • De consolatione philosophiae. Opuscula theologica

Anicius Manlius Severinus Boëthius, Claudio Moreschini•BOOK•De Consolatione Philosophiae.…•2005

Demand for Moreschini's Boethius edition was so great and its distribution so broad, that the publishers began with a second, revised edition after only a very brief period of time, in order to meet its anticipated continuing popularity in the coming years. By including further hand-written material, improvements and corrections were made in almost 200 places in the praefatio, text and text critical apparatus.

Marcus Tullius Cicero, Cicero Cicero et al.•BOOK•De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum•2005

This text is based on an inspection of the most important surviving manuscripts of Antiquity and a re-evaluation of the textual transmission of Cicero in the Middle Ages. All in all, therefore, the new edition rests on the collation of a larger number of manuscripts than that of Theodor Schiche (BT, 1915)

  • Aetas Claudianea

Franca Ela Consolino, Lucio Ceccarelli et al.•BOOK•Aetas Claudianea•2004

The late-antique Roman poet Claudian has enjoyed an upsurge of interest in his work for some thirty years. In spite of increasing appreciation for his artistry, Claudian's position within the history of Latin literature has not been clearly defined. This volume presents the results of the first symposium ever devoted to Claudian and Latin literature. Well-known scholars such as Franca Ela Consolino, Manfred Fuhrmann, Siegmar Döpp, Isabella Gualan…
