  • Chert procurement for inferring Neanderthal mobility in central western Iberia

Open Access•Telmo Pereira, Ana Abrunhosa et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2026

Lithic raw material sourcing is one of the most effective approaches for inferring exploitation territories during the Palaeolithic, including for Neanderthals. Certain raw materials, particularly chert, are especially well suited to this type of investigation because the distinctive characteristics of each geological source can be reliably identified through a combination of macroscopic observation, low-magnification analysis, and geochemical me…

  • Lithic Techno-economics and OSL Chronology of the Later Stone Age at Chessungalane, Save River Valley, Mozambique

Open Access•Osama Samawi, Jeffrey I Rose et al.•ARTICLE•African Archaeological Review•2026

Nestled between East and Southern Africa, the Stone Age archaeology of Mozambique offers important insights into Later Stone Age (LSA) behavioral variability across a region pivotal to understanding human adaptations. Here, we present results from technological analysis, refitting and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating of the newly discovered site of Chessungalane (CHE) in south-central Mozambique. OSL dates indicate occupation spanni…

  • Late Pleistocene Landscape and Settlement Dynamics of Portuguese Estremadura

Jonathan Haws, Michael M Benedetti et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2020•References: 89

Here we report the results of an integrated geoarchaeological survey to study Palaeolithic human settlement dynamics in the coastal region of Portuguese Estremadura. The region has been an important focus of human occupation across multiple glacial-interglacial cycles, including periods of well-documented abrupt climate instability during MIS 3 and 2. The pedestrian survey covered a roughly 10 km wide strip of land between São Pedro de Muel and P…

  • Human adaptive responses to climate and environmental change during the Gravettian of Lapa do Picareiro (Portugal)

    Open Access•Jonathan Haws, Michael Benedetti et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2020•Cited by: 4•References: 33

  • The hydrogen isotopic compositions of sedimentary mid-chain n-alkanes record ecological change at a Portuguese paleowetland

    Open Access•Audrey K Taylor, Michael M Benedetti et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2019

  • Late Pleistocene site formation and paleoclimate at Lapa do Picareiro, Portugal

    Open Access•Michael M Benedetti, Jonathan Haws et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 81

The cave site of Lapa do Picareiro, Portugal contains a deep (~10 m) sedimentary sequence representing much of the Middle and Upper Paleolithic, with abundant animal bones, lithic/bone/shell artifacts, and charcoal/ash in hearths. A deposition model based on 49 radiocarbon ages demonstrates average sedimentation rates of 0.1–0.3 mm a −1 between 9 and 45 ka. Extrapolation suggests an age at the base of the excavation of 65–78 ka. The cave sediment…

  • Portable art and personal ornaments from Txina-Txina

Open Access•Nuno Bicho, João Cascalheira et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 6

This paper reports on preliminary fieldwork at the Later Stone Age site of Txina-Txina in Mozambique. Excavation yielded a long stratigraphic sequence, a large lithic assemblage, a unique decorated gastropod shell fragment and two ostrich eggshell beads-the first of their type recovered from a Stone Age context in Mozambique

  • Middle and Late Stone Age of the Niassa region, northern Mozambique. Preliminary results

    Open Access•Nuno Bicho, Jonathan Haws et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 27

  • An Upper Palaeolithic Landscape Analysis of Coastal Portugal Using Ground‐penetrating Radar

    Open Access•Lawrence B Conyers, J Michael Daniels et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological Prospection•2013•Cited by: 6•References: 6

Ground‐penetrating mapping radar allows for the three‐dimensional reconstruction of ancient landscapes by interpreting geological horizons associated with archaeological sites. When the geological framework of a site can be placed in both time and space, ancient environments and people's usage and adaptation to landscapes can be studied. In coastal Portugal late Ice Age people discarded stone tools within aeolian sands that were deposited directl…

  • A model for raw material management as a response to local and global environmental constraints

    Telmo Pereira, Michael M Benedetti•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2013•Cited by: 5•References: 44

  • Coastal wetlands and the Neanderthal settlement of Portuguese Estremadura

    Open Access•Jonathan Haws, Michael M Benedetti et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2010•Cited by: 4•References: 22

Coastal wetlands are ecotone settings that offer diverse sets of resources for human exploitation, yet evidence for Pleistocene occupation rarely preserves due to recent postglacial sea‐level rise. During an ongoing geoarchaeological survey of Portuguese Estremadura we identified uplifted Pleistocene sediments that record coastal features including raised beaches, tidal channels, muds, peat, and coastal dunes. Stratified concentrations of Middle …
