  • Posible interacción humana en una lesión de Lestodon armatus de 33.000 años en Uruguay

Open Access•Luis Lemoine, Elspeth Hayes et al.•ARTICLE•Revista Española de Antropología…•2026

This paper discusses an archaeological finding at Arroyo del Vizcaíno (Uruguay) (Fariña et al. 2025), where a deep conical perforation was identified in the calcaneus of a Lestodon armatus specimen, an extinct ground sloth. The 41 mm deep by 21 mm diameter lesion was analyzed using Computed Tomography scans, silicone casting and microscopic wear and residue analysis. The authors propose that this perforation may have been caused by a blunt object…

  • The Megafauna3D Dataset

Open Access•Luciano Varela, P Sebastián Tambusso et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Open Archaeology Data•2025

This dataset consists of 3D digital models of fossilised remains from the Pleistocene megafauna of Uruguay, now publicly available for scientists, educators, and the general public. The fossils, housed in collections across Uruguay, were digitised through photogrammetry, structured light, and CT scanning. The dataset includes models of extinct species such as ground sloths, glyptodonts, mastodonts, and a sabre-toothed cat, which played significan…

  • Hard Facts in an Imperfect Site

    Richard A Fariña, P Sebastián Tambusso et al.•ARTICLE•PaleoAmerica•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 12

With the excuse of writing a critique to Domínguez-Rodrigo et al. (2021, duly replied here: Domínguez-Rodrigo & Baquedano, 2022), Holcomb et al. (this volume) intend to deny the proposal that the Arroyo del Vizcaíno (AdV, Fariña et al. 2014) is a site with evidence of human presence in South America before the LGM. Among the flaws of their critique, it must be mentioned that they decide to utterly ignore a few lines of evidence that sustain the q…

  • Presence of the ground sloth Valgipes bucklandi (Xenarthra, Folivora, Scelidotheriinae) in southern Uruguay during the Late Pleistocene

Open Access•Carolina Lobato, Luciano Varela et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2021

  • Co-occurrence of mylodontid sloths and insights on their potential distributions during the late Pleistocene

    Open Access•Luciano Varela, Richard A Fariña•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2016

Species distribution models (SDMs) for the last interglacial (LIG), the global last glacial maximum (LGM) and the Holocene climatic optimum (HCO) were generated for three extinct South American Pleistocene mylodontid giant sloths, Glossotherium robustum , Lestodon armatus and Mylodon darwinii . They are recorded co-occurring in some localities including Arroyo del Vizcaíno site (AdV) in Uruguay. Co-occurrence records were studied based on the ove…
