Late Antique Letter Collections
Bringing together an international team of historians, classicists, and scholars of religion, this volume provides the first comprehensive overview of the extant Greek and Latin letter collections of late antiquity (ca. 300–600 c.e.). Each chapter addresses a major collection of Greek or Latin literary letters, introducing the social and textual histories of each collection and examining its assembly, publication, and transmission. Late Antique Letter Collections
"This volume provides the first comprehensive overview of the extant Greek and Latin letter collections of late antiquity (ca. 300-600 C.E.). Bringing together an international team of historians, classicists, and scholars of religion, it illustrates how letter collections advertised an image of the letter writer and introduces the social and textual histories of each collection. Each chapter addresses a major collection of Greek or Latin literar…
The Ghost of Cicero’s Letters
This paper investigates the privileged but fraught relationship between historiography and epistolography in the tradition of senatorial letter writing and explores the role that the ghost of Cicero’s letters plays in shaping that tradition. Even though Cicero is often invoked as the unachievable example, his letters became the model against which later letter-writers redefined the boundaries of the genre and of their own epistolary project. In s…
Prudentius, Aurelius Clemens
Aurelius Prudentius Clemens (348–after 405 CE ) is one of the most important and influential figures in Latin Christian poetry.
Symmachus, Quintus Aurelius ( signo Eusebius)
Although over nine hundred of his letters survive, the reputation of Quintus Aurelius Symmachus (ca. 340–402 CE ) is indissolubly linked to and conditioned by the relatio de ara Victoriae , an official report in which Symmachus, as prefect of Rome, asked for the restoration of the Altar of Victory and argued for the repeal of Gratian's legislation that had deprived the traditional cults of state support.
Ausonius
Gibbon's typically trenchant judgment (“the poetical fame of Ausonius condemns the taste of his age”) has had a negative and lasting impact on Ausonian scholarship, and only relatively recent studies have tried (successfully) to redress the balance.
Paulinus of Nola
The almost exact contemporary of Augustine of Hippo and Prudentius (see Prudentius, Aurelius Clemens), Meropius Pontius Paulinus was born at Bordeaux ca. 352/353 CE and died at Nola on June 22, 431.
From the Tetrarchs to the Theodosians
An integrated collection of essays examining the politics, social networks, law, historiography, and literature of the later Roman world. The volume treats three central themes: the first section looks at political and social developments across the period and argues that, in spite of the stress placed upon traditional social structures, many elements of Roman life remained only slightly changed. The second section focuses upon biographical texts…
Roman matchmaking
“From ‘Romulus’ to Justinian patronage was a defining characteristic of what it meant to be Roman.” Far from disappearing in the late empire, patronage remained an essential tool for the recruitment of imperial administrators and happily coexisted (and, indeed, flourished) alongside the new system of the sale of offices. This has been argued by Peter Garnsey in this volume with special reference to socio-political advancement and the exercise of …
Q. Aurelius Symmachus
Symmachus was a brilliant orator, writer, and statesman, often flatly labeled as one of the last pagan senators. Cristiana Sogno offers a reconstruction of the political career of Symmachus through close analysis of his extensive writings, while also proposing a critical reevaluation of his historical importance. In contrast to traditional interpretation, Sogno's study demonstrates that Symmachus was primarily an influential politician, rather th…
