  • What Is the Acheulean

    Open Access•Marie-Hélène Moncel, Carolina Cucart-Mora et al.•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Anthropology Issues…•2026

The Acheulean represents the longest cultural period known to human history, lasting globally for more than 1.75 million years. It may have emerged as early as 1.95 Ma in Africa, spreading throughout much of the continent and then into Eurasia and lasting up to 350–200 ka in western Europe and South Asia, and even later in eastern Asia. Originally defined in the 1870s, the term Acheulean is one of the earliest and most contested classifications i…

  • Early Middle Palaeolithic Occupations Dated to MIS 7 at the Abri du Maras (Ardèche, Southeast France)

    Open Access•M H Moncel, Marie-Hélène Moncel et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Paleolithic Archaeology•2025

New excavations at the Abri du Maras have yielded remains of hitherto unknown deposits (layer 6) from the base of the sequence, with a small lithic and faunal series dated to MIS 7. In this paper, we investigate this occupation, undoubtedly in a cave context, before the cave gradually gave way to a shelter where the last occupations took place. The faunal assemblage accumulated through anthropic activities, and cervids are the dominant species. T…

  • Yacimientos simulados y arqueología experimental como herramienta de aprendizaje en Arqueología y Paleontología

Isabel Dur ́an, Isabel Dur´an et al.•ARTICLE•Boletín de Arqueología Experimental•2023

Experimental archaeology has had a wide diffusion in the field of research and dissemination in recent decades. However, its use in the generation of simulated archaeological models offers a resource of enormous potential to deepen the field of interpretation of the archaeological record. In this work, we present a first approach to archaeological simulations on an experimental basis with special attention to the models created in the LAEX-UAM. W…

    Open Access•Guillermo Bustos‐Pérez, Guillermo Bustos-Pérez et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Lithic Studies•2023•Cited by: 9•References: 31

Lithic artefacts are usually associated with the different knapping methods used in their production. Flakes exhibit metric and technological features representative of the flaking method used to detach them. However, lithic production is a dynamic process in which discrete methods can be blurred, and in which features can vary throughout the process. An intermediate knapping method between the discoid and Levallois is commonly referred to under …

  • Predicting Flake Mass: A View from Machine Learning

    Guillermo Bustos‐Pérez, Javier Baena Preysler et al.•ARTICLE•Lithic Technology•2021•References: 44

Estimating flake mass based on remaining attributes bears an important relationship for the interpretation of lithic assemblages. Previous works have pointed out the relationship between flake attributes and prediction of flake mass. This study builds on previous works by using data from an experimental collection of flakes. Estimated mass was arrived at by generating a multiple linear regression model that combines several predictive variables. …

The open-air Palaeolithic site of Las Delicias, located in the Manzanares river valley (Madrid, Spain), has been the object of recent archaeological excavations during 2008 and 2009. Field data gathered at the site has been processed through Geographic Information Systems software, and results have been represented in 3D. We have achieved a topographic and archaeological database which has been associated with 3D planimetries through GIS. At the …

Open Access•Javier Baena, Charles P Egeland et al.•BOOK•Stone Tools and Fossil Bones•2012

The stone tools and fossil bones from the earliest archaeological sites in Africa have been used over the past fifty years to create models that interpret how early hominins lived, foraged, behaved and communicated and how early and modern humans evolved. In this book, an international team of archaeologists and primatologists examines early Stone Age tools and bones and uses scientific methods to test alternative hypotheses that explain the arch…
