Colonial Families at Roman Knossos
The case of Caelia Q.l. Chia – named on an inscribed block decorated with a balustrade and pilasters from the Venizeleion burial ground that formed part of the North Cemetery of Knossos – raises the question: how can we identify some of the colonial families at Roman Knossos? This freedwoman can be identified in multiple ways as a member of a colonial family. The text naming her adds a new inscription of early date, and one in Latin, to the corpu…
The Imperial Cult
Forty years after the publication of Sanders’ Roman Crete, a broader range of evidence for the imperial cult on Crete is available—temples and other structures, monumental architectural members, imperial altars, portraiture and statuary, coinage, statue and portrait bases, other inscriptions, priest and high priests, members and archons of the Panhellenion, and festivals—and far more places can now be identified as cities participating in the imp…
Stamps on Italian Sigillata and the Renaissance of Aptera, Crete
This study presents a group of stamps on Italian sigillata dating from the 1st to mid-2nd centuries a.d. that were discovered at Aptera, Crete. Most were discovered in systematic excavations of the city's theater; the rest were collected or found in areas associated with two cisterns and one of the baths. This study not only increases the total number of published stamps from Crete, but it also enhances our understanding of the provenience and ch…
Four Inscriptions From Greater Knossos and the Road to Its Port at Heraklion (Crete)
Four inscriptions of Hellenistic to Early Roman date were found in rescue excavations undertaken during the construction of public housing at the location Bedevi, east of Leophoros Knossou in the suburbs of modern Aghios Ioannis (Heraklion). These four inscriptions constitute an intriguing group as they provide evidence of a rural installation where a vessel with an inscribed lid was stored, a sepulchral site and private worship of Artemis, as we…
From Capital to Colony
This article present and contextualises five new inscriptions from central Crete: one from the hinterland of Gortyn, two from Knossos, and two more in all likelihood from Knossos. Internal geographical mobility from Gortyn to Knossos is illustrated by a Greek inscription from the hinterland of Gortyn. The Knossian inscriptions add new evidence for the local affairs of the Roman colony. A funerary or honorary inscription and two religious dedicati…
On the Road Again
A new Latin inscription found south ofAptera documents an Early Trajanic stage in the development of the Roman road network of western Crete. A reconsideration ofAptera and its hinterland provides the topographical context for this milestone, which apparently was found in situ. The text records direct imperial intervention and generosity. The mileage figure suggests the location of Aptera's port, and supports the theory that Cretan milestones ind…
