  • Remarkable Diversity of Beetles (Coleoptera) in the Late Triassic (Norian) “Solite Deposit” of Virginia and North Carolina

    Open Access•Julia Criscione-Vastano, David A Grimaldi•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the American Museum…•2024

Known from over 50 Triassic localities worldwide, beetles were a significant component of the early Mesozoic paleofauna. Beetle fossils are particularly diverse in the Late Triassic (Norian) Cow Branch and Walnut Cove formations (Solite deposit) of Virginia and North Carolina, with 100 distinct morphotypes sorted from approximately 1000 specimens. The diversity of the Solite Coleoptera is documented, the 100 beetle morphotypes are informally desc…

  • Comparative Anatomy of the Insect Tracheal System Part 1

Open Access•Hollister W Herhold, Steven R Davis et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the American Museum…•2023

A broad comparative study of insect respiratory morphology is presented. Tracheae, epidermal invaginations extending into the body in branching networks of tubes, supply tissues with direct access to air for gas exchange. While previous tracheal studies focused on a handful of taxa and lacked in consistency, here a unified system of tracheal nomenclature is established using visualizations from micro-CT scanning of representatives from apterygote…

  • Revision of the Nearctic Species of the Genus Amiota Loew (Diptera

    Open Access•Lance E Jones, David A Grimaldi•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the American Museum…•2022

Thorough biotic inventories are still needed even in families with paradigm organisms like Drosophilidae, including well-studied areas such as North America. This work presents a taxonomic revision of the species of the genus Amiota Loew in North America and the Nearctic portion of Mexico. Amiota steganoptera Malloch is currently excluded from the Nearctic and Amiota setigera Malloch is synonymized under Amiota humeralis Loew. Specimens of Amiota…

  • Hirtodrosophila of North America (Diptera

    Open Access•David A Grimaldi•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the American Museum…•2018

Species concepts are morphologically revised and updated for members of the mycophagous genus Hirtodrosophila Duda that occur in America north of Mexico. Photomicrographs of external features, illustrations of male and female terminalia, and detailed descriptions are provided for 12 species. One species, H. cinerea (Patterson and Wheeler) is known only from the original description; its status is uncertain. Species exclusively from the southweste…

  • Diverse Orthorrhaphan Flies (Insecta

    Open Access•David A Grimaldi•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the American Museum…•2016

A remarkable diversity of new nonempidoid orthorrhaphan flies from the mid-Cretaceous of Myanmar (Late Albian–Early Cenomanian, ca. 99 Ma) is presented, including 28 species (all but one new) in 22 genera (13 new), and at least 12 families. Two families are new; three genera are unplaced in Tabanomorpha and one unplaced within Brachycera. Comparisons are presented between the amber taxa and extensive lithified taxa from the Jurassic and Cretaceou…

  • Treatise on the Isoptera of the World

Open Access•K Mahesh Krishna, Kumar Krishna et al.•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the American Museum…•2013

A comprehensive compendium on the taxonomy and biology of the 3106 living and fossil species of the worlds termites is presented, along with reviews of Isoptera morphology and evolution, identification keys, the history of termite systematics, and summary of the worlds 363 significant pest species. A complete bibliography is provided of nearly 5000 references covering virtually all aspects of termite taxonomy and biology through December 2011. Th…
