  • Die Briefe Frontos und senatorische Interaktion mit dem Princeps in der Hohen Kaiserzeit

    Christoph Michels•ARTICLE•Hermès•2023•Cited by: 2

The epistolary corpus of M. Cornelius Fronto, the rhetoric teacher of the ‘princes’ M. Aurelius and L. Verus, offers valuable insights into the functioning of the monarchical order of the Principate, despite the seemingly trivial subject matter of many of his letters, due to the unique level of communication. Especially the communication with the domus Augusta provides important additions to the comparable letters of Pliny the Younger. While scho…

The Ariarathids were an Iranian dynasty that ruled over the Hellenistic kingdom of Cappadocia from its beginnings in the third century until ca. 96 bce . They were initially dominated by the Seleucids, and with increasing independence became their allies. After Rome's defeat of the Seleucids, the Ariarathids switched sides and became allies of the Attalids and Rome. In the late second century, the Mithradatids of Pontos tried to establish control…

  • Same but Different

Dalal Elarji, Christoph Michels•ARTICLE•Architecture and Culture•2021

While architecture has surfaced in recent years as a key resource in shaping the entrepreneurial university both programmatically and aesthetically, the Floating University Berlin has taken architectural design as the starting point for developing a temporary space for creating and reflecting upon the future of urban societies and the role universities might play therein. In its unfolding the FUB resonates with some of the processes of neoliberal…

  • Antoninus Pius im Akzeptanzsystem. Ein ‚durchschnittlicher‘ Princeps zwischen dynastischem Prinzip und charismatischer Herrschaft

    Open Access•Christoph Michels•ARTICLE•Historische Zeitschrift•2021

This article argues that the notion of affective atmosphere provides a privileged access to the study of organizational affect as it relates to a spatial ontology of 'being-together-in-a-sphere'. Drawing on the study of affective atmospheres in philosophy and cultural geography, we develop a conceptual positioning from which to analyze a musical intervention in the streets and squares of Berlin. The study traces the preparation and enactment of a…

  • Researching affective atmospheres

    Open Access•Christoph Michels•ARTICLE•Geographica Helvetica•2015

In this contribution, I suggest activating the notion of atmospheres as a heuristic device to empirically research affects. I will argue that analysing the composition of atmospheres allows one to take into account three key dimensions of affects: their spatio-materiality, their sensuality and their (in)stability. Building on a process understanding of atmospheres, I reflect on how each of the three dimensions can be empirically researched and ho…

  • The Spread of Polis Institutions in Hellenistic Cappadocia and the Peer Polity Interaction Model

    Christoph Michels•CHAPTER•Shifting Social Imaginaries in…•2013

The settlement pattern of Cappadocia that was divided into ten strategies was dominated by villages with only a few indigenous cities in between. It came rather as a surprise when a late Hellenistic inscription from Cappadocian Hanisa became known which attests for this small town a fully fledged polis constitution. This chapter presents a discussion of this text and the cultural change one can deduce from it serves as the starting point on searc…
