Ψευδόπτωμα and Plutarch’s Comparison of Pelopidas and Marcellus 1.9
Addendum Vratislaviensis
The Codex Vratislaviensis of Philostratus’ Life of Apollonius of Tyana
Gottfried Olearius, on p. X of the preface to his edition of the complete works by Philostratus, mentions a ms. of Philostratus' Life of Apollonius of Tyana preserved in Breslau (modern Wrocaw, Poland).1 He frequently refers to readings of the ms. in the notes to his edition of the Life (henceforward VA [Vita Apollonii]). C.L. Kayser mentions the ms. on p. X of the preface to his 1844 editio maior of Philostratus' Opera omnia, stating that a full…

The Historical Present of Atelic and Durative Verbs in Greek Tragedy
Among modern scholars of ancient Greek it is almost universally accepted that the historical present is only used for (telic) events and not for (atelic) states and activities. A survey of the extant complete tragedies shows that this view is untenable: there are passages where static verbs like κεῖμαι ‘lie’ and εὕδω ‘sleep’ are used in the historical present and where the historical present describes a state or activity which is extended in time…

Towards A New Critical Edition Of Philostratus Life Of Apollonius
This chapter first sketches the work on the text of Vita Apollonii Tyanei (VA) done until now. Then, it gives a list of the MSS, which contains the complete text or longer excerpts. Subsequently, the chapter discusses the affiliation of the MSS, presenting a stemma codicum. The stemma of the MSS of the VA is bipartite. A stands apart against all the other MSS, which derive from a lost common ancestor α which is a gemellus of A ; A has no extant p…
Plato Theaetetus 182e1-2
In Pl. Tht. 182c1-183b5 Socrates deals with the implications of the Heraclitean doctrine of flux for the thesis (attributed to Protagoras) that knowledge is perception. After having illustrated that, according to the flux theory, the perceived object is subject to constant change (182d1-5), he deals with perception itself (182e1-2): μενειν ποτε εν αυτω τω οραν η ακουειν. It is generally believed that this phrase means that sight, for instance, do…

Are Petitionary Dreams Non-predictive? Observations on Artemidorus' Oneirocritica 1.6 and 4.2
In two passages of the Oneirocritica, Artemidorus discusses the practice of asking the gods for a dream containing a prediction or an advice. The prevailing opinion among scholars is that Artemidorus rejects this type of dreams categorically. In this article it is argued that, on the contrary, Artemidorus does accept the validity of petitionary dreams, provided that some rules are taken into account. Further, a couple of proposals for improvement…
Critical Notes on Plato's Politeia
This volume is intended to accompany the new Oxford edition of Plato's Republic, published in 2003. It is based on a series of ten articles in Mnemosyne, dating from 1988 to 2003. It contains discussions of textual problems of various kinds. Much attention is paid to Plato's use of particles, to the moods and tenses of the verb, and to pragmatics and style. Moreover, the transmission of the text receives ample attention. The book is highly recomm…
The Encheiridion of Epictetus and its Three Christian Adaptations
Epictetus' Encheiridion, which was composed by his pupil Arrian with the purpose of giving a comprehensive account of Epictetus' thought, has been transmitted in many sources. Besides the rich direct tradition there are three Christian adaptations, a voluminous commentary by the sixth-century philosopher Simplicius, as well as the indirect tradition. The most recent critical edition is the editio maior by Johannes Schweighäuser (1798), which does…
