I am sorry for troubling you with the bother of replying! But I really want to know’
Exactly one month before the outbreak of the Great War, on 28 June 1914, Thomas Edward Lawrence hastily wrote a note to the great specialist in Arabic epigraphy, the Swiss scholar Max van Berchem. At that time Lawrence, together with Charles Leonard Woolley, was preparing the publication of The Wilderness of Zin, regarding the archaeological survey of the southern Negev conducted shortly before on behalf of the Palestine Exploration Fund. Discuss…
The Lepcitanian territory
Since 1995 the Archaeological Mission to Libya of Roma Tre University has carried out several surveys in the territory and suburbs of Lepcis Magna. Besides the survey of the archaeological and historical sites, the Roma Tre team has also had the opportunity to observe and record the development of the landscape through periods of war and peace. In this article, the issues related to the cultural heritage in the area of the modern city of Khoms an…
The Lepcitanian landscape across the ages
Since 2007, the Archaeological Mission of Roma Tre University has conducted surveys in the territory of Lepcis Magna, in a peri-urban area between Ras el-Mergheb and Ras el-Hammam. To date, 168 sites have been surveyed. From the analysis of this data collection can be drawn a synthesis of the landscape's evolution from the Hellenistic to the end of the Ottoman period (including the analysis of battlefields and military structures related to the I…
Centenarium
The neuter substantive centenarium appears in a series of documents to designate a particular type of building. The etymology and precise meaning of this word have long been debated by scholars, who have proposed a wide range of explanations, none of which appears to be entirely satisfactory. In this paper, we put forward a different solution, taking into account textual, archaeological and linguistic evidence. In our opinion, the word centenariu…
Italian archaeologists in colonial Tripolitania
This is a contribution to a reassessment of colonial archaeology in Libya, based on the academic and political/ ideological portraits of the archaeologists serving in the Tripolitanian and (from 1936) Libyan Soprintendenza . Italian colonial archaeologists were, often deliberately, instruments of political strategy. They searched for traces of Rome in the nationalistic context of the Libyan War, and sought to reconstruct an idealised vision of th…
L’elmo-diadema
In 1998 a mile-station was discovered along the ancient coastal road 1400 m east of Abu Kammash, a centre identified with ancient Pisida on the basis of the Roman itineraries: the Itinerarium Antonini records a distance of 54 miles from Sabratha; the Tabula Peutingeriana of only 53. The Department of Antiquity of Sabratha in collaboration with the Archaeological Mission of the University Roma Tre recovered a milestone of Caracalla (216 AD) and an…
A topographic research sample in the territory of Lepcis Magna
Working with the Libyan Department of Antiquity, the Mission of the University Roma Tre in Lepcis Magna undertook, in April-May 1997 and 1998, an intensive topographic research in a broad coastal sample of the Lepcis Magna territory, west of Khoms and around the Roman villa of Sīlīn (site 29)(Fig. 1). The survey, in an area of about 20 square Km Dounded to the East by wādī al-Ṭūra/al-Fānī and to the West on wādī Jabrūn was conducted by a mixed It…
Alle sorgenti del Cinyps
This paper deals with the location of the springs of the river Cinyps in Tripolitania by comparing literary sources with topographic and archaeological data provided by explorers and by geoarchaeological studies carried out by the University of Rome III mission in collaboration with the Department of Antiquities between 1998 and 2000. Although the Cinyps may be identified with the drainage basin of Wadi Taraglat, some 80 km long, its springs were…
