How might historical queer and trans activist tactics and visions of the future be used to invigorate contemporary LGBTQ+ politics and thought? This article provides an introduction to the ‘Imagining Queer Europe Then and Now’ special issue of Third Text, an issue which emerges from the final conference of the pan-European queer history project ‘Cruising the Seventies’. We identify the uneven and complex ways in which LGBTQ+ activism, networks, e…

    Fiona Anderson•ARTICLE•Third Text•2021

Throughout 2017, cultural institutions across England and Wales marked the fiftieth anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of sex between men. In this article I explore two projects about public sex and queer space developed in London that year by two contemporary queer artists: Liz Rosenfeld and Prem Sahib. Both employ queer approaches to preservation and archival labour in the face of imminent material erasure, particularly the loss of de…

  • Preserving and Politicising the Alternative Space

    Fiona Anderson, F D Anderson•ARTICLE•Oxford Art Journal•2015

As the long-term impact of the global recession on federal arts funding is felt in American cities from Los Angeles to Detroit, a number of recent publications have turned to the subject of earlier self-organised and largely non-commercial art venues in the USA, primarily the development of so-called alternative spaces in post-industrial New York from the mid-to-late 1960s to the mid-1980s. As Alan Moore notes, early alternative spaces were ‘sust…

  • Cruising the Queer Ruins of New York's Abandoned Waterfront

    Fiona Anderson•ARTICLE•Performance Research•2015•References: 3

In late 1970s New York, prior to the advent of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, artists and writers including David Wojnarowicz, Alvin Baltrop, Peter Hujar, and John Rechy walked the piers of the city's derelict waterfront in search of anonymous sex with the myriad men who cruised there. The buildings became props in the sexual encounters that took place there. The derelict landscape of the harbour and Wojnarowicz's erotic reaction to the forms of the ware…

  • Sequence and priming in 15 month‐olds' reactions to brief arm restraint

    Open Access•Michael Potegal, Sarah Robison et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•2007•References: 39

Brief, gentle arm restraint is widely used in experimental studies of children's anger, but the pattern of responses generated by such restraint has been incompletely described. We now describe a hierarchy of responses within trials as well as an escalation across trials that have both methodological and theoretical significance. Mothers of 87 15‐month olds prevented them from playing with a toy by restraining their arms on two consecutive 30 sec…

  • Spinning the Ephemeral with the Sublime

    Fiona Anderson•ARTICLE•Fashion Theory•2005•References: 6

This article explores the topic of tweed cloth as a menswear textile in the late nineteenth century with the aim of expanding the consideration of the relationships between fashion in modernity and rural and urban landscapes. The article does not contest the idea that modern fashion is predominantly an urban phenomenon. However, by analyzing a fashion textile produced within a rural context it aims to complexify the assumption that late nineteent…

The visual language of nineteenth-century English aristocratic life, as typified by Savile Row tailoring, has retained a cultural potency and commercial appeal to the present day, despite an almost total collapse of the social, economic and cultural formation from which it arose. The lack of published historical information available to explain this scenario inspired this research, which is based on my case-study of “Henry Poole and Co., Savile R…

  • Early Environmental Support and Elementary School Adjustment as Predictors of School Adjustment in Middle Adolescence

Longitudinal data from a high-risk sample (N = 173, male: n = 93, female: n = 80) were used to examine socioemotional antecedents of school adjustment in adolescence. Parental problem-solving support in early childhood and early adolescence and measures of peer competence, externalizing behavior, and emotional health/self-esteem in early middle childhood were examined both independently and in relation to academic achievement in early middle chil…

Privatization has been one of the most important and controversial policy initiatives to emerge in the UK over the last decade. However, to date there has been little attempt to assess the impact of privatization on customers, despite the fact that much of the justification for the privatization of the public utilities was couched in terms of the benefits it would bring for customers. In the case of the water industry opportunities for competitio…
