  • A 40,000-year packrat midden series from Cataviña, central Baja California, Mexico

    Open Access•Julio L Betancourt, Julio Betancourt et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2026

Thirty packrat ( Neotoma spp.) middens collected from boulder fields near Cataviña, Baja California, Mexico, at 640–680 m elevation provide the first long chronology of macrofossils and pollen spanning the late Quaternary in the Central Desert of Baja California. Midden plant macrofossil and pollen assemblages document a rich chaparral/woodland assemblage during the last glacial and early Holocene dominated by Parry pinyon ( Pinus quadrifolia ) a…

  • Deep History and Biogeography of La Frontera

    Open Access•Thomas R Van Devender•CHAPTER•Design with the Desert•2016

The dramatic vegetation gradients along the border are summarized in Biotic Communities of the American Southwest-United States and Mexico, the accompanying vegetation map, Webster, and various regional floras. In the Puerto Blanco Mountains of Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument (9 miles north of the Sonora border), saguaro and brittlebush returned to Arizona soon after the beginning of the Holocene about 11,000 years ago but were living in xeri…

  • Paleoclimatic Implications of Holocene Plant Remains from the Sierra Bacha, Sonora, Mexico

    Open Access•Thomas R Van Devender, T Burgess et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1994

A total of 93 plant taxa were identified from 11 packrat ( Neotoma sp.) midden samples from the Sierra Bacha on the coast of the Gulf of California near Puerto Libertad, Sonora, Mexico. Nine indurated samples have radiocarbon dates ranging from 9970 to 320 yr B.P. Sonoran desertscrub was present on rocky slopes throughout the Holocene. Early Holocene assemblages dominated by Fouquieria columnaris (boojum tree) reflect vegetation and climate more …

  • Fossil Insect Evidence for Late Quaternary Climatic Change in the Big Bend Region, Chihuahuan Desert, Texas

    Open Access•Scott A Elia, Scott A Elias et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1990

A series of 50 packrat midden assemblages from the Big Bend region of the Chihuahuan Desert, ranging in age from >36,000 yr B.P. to recent, yielded abundant, diverse arthropod faunas. The mesic nature of regional Wisconsin age climates is substantiated by the fauna from 30,000–12,000 yr B.P., especially during the middle Wisconsin (30,000–20,000 yr B.P.). Late Wisconsin faunas contained grassland species which are confined today to cooler, moiste…

  • Late Quaternary Arthropod Remains from Sonoran Desert Packrat Middens, Southwestern Arizona and Northwestern Sonora

    Open Access•William E Hall, Thomas R Van Devender et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1988

A total of 50 arthropod taxa were identified from 41 fossil packrat ( Neotoma sp.) middens from 160 to 625 m elevation in three study areas in the Lower Colorado River Valley subdivision of the Sonoran Desert. Radiocarbon dates associated with the middens range from >43,200 to 610 yr B.P. The fauna in the Tinajas Altas Mountains, southwestern Arizona, was relatively modern by ca. 10,000 yr B.P. in the early Holocene although a California juniper …

  • Holocene Vegetation and Climate in the Puerto Blanco Mountains, Southwestern Arizona

    Open Access•Thomas R Van Devender•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1987

Plant macrofossils from 21 pack rat ( Neotoma sp.) middens at 535–605 m from the Puerto Blanco Mountains, southwestern Arizona, provide and excellent history of vegetation and climate for the last 14, 120 yr B.P. in the Sonoran Desert. A late Wisconsin juniper-Joshua tree woodland gave way to a transitional early Holocene desertscrub with sparse Juniperus californica (California juniper) by 10,540 yr B.P. Important Sonoran Desert plants including…

  • Late Pleistocene Woodlands in the Bolson de Mapimi

    Open Access•Thomas R Van Devender, T Burgess et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1985

Packrat middens radiocarbon dated at 12,280 ± 345 and 12,700 ± 165 yr B.P. record expansions of junipers and papershell pinyon ( Pinus remota ) into the desert lowlands of Durango and Coahuila, Mexico (26° N). Extralocal trees and shrubs presently occur 24–580 km in nearly all directions including more subtropical areas to the northeast and southeast. An equable Late Wisconsin climate marked by mild winters with increased precipitation and by coo…

  • Biogeographic Implications of a Packrat Midden Sequence from the Sacramento Mountains, South-Central New Mexico

    Open Access•Thomas R Van Devender, Julio L Betancourt et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1984

Thirteen packrat ( Neotoma spp.) and two porcupine ( Erethizon dorsatum ) middens from 1555 to 1690 m elevation from the Sacramento Mountains, New Mexico, provide an 18,000-yr vegetation record in the northern Chiuahuan Desert. The vegetation sequence is a mesic, Wisconsin fullglacial (18,000–16,000 yr B.P.) pinyon-juniper-oak woodland; a xeric, early Holocene (ca. 11,000–8000 yr B.P.) juniper-oak woodland; a middle Holocene (ca. 8000-4000 yr B.P…

  • Late Pleistocene Piñon Pines in the Chihuahuan Desert

    Open Access•Ronald M Lanner, Thomas R Van Devender•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1981

Examination of late Pleistocene packrat middens from the northern and central Chihuahuan Desert disclosed macrofossils of Colorado piñon ( Pinus edulis ) and Texas piñon ( P. remota ). Radiocarbon dating indicates that Texas piñon was widespread in Trans-Pecos Texas and northeastern Mexico between 30,000 and 11,000 yr B.P. Today it is found in small refugia east of its former range. In the late Pleistocene Colorado piñon occurred at lower elevati…

  • Shasta Ground Sloth ( Nothrotheriops shastense Hoffstetter) at Shelter Cave, New Mexico

    Open Access•Robert S Thompson, Thomas R Van Devender et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1980

Seven coprolites of the extinct Shasta ground sloth ( Nothrotheriops shastense ) were recently discovered in the Los Angeles County Museum collection from Shelter Cave, New Mexico. Three dung balls provided radiocarbon ages of 11,330, 12,330 and 12,430 yr B.P. Packrat ( Neotoma ) middens disclose a xeric juniper woodland at Shelter Cave during the sloth's occupation. Plant cuticles from the dung indicate that the ground sloth had a diet dominated…

  • Pollen Analysis of Fossil Packrat Middens from the Sonoran Desert

    Open Access•James E King, Thomas R Van Devender•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1977

Pollen contained in 22 fossil packrat middens from the Sonoran Desert provides a complementary, but differing, view of the paleoenvironment from that derived by analysis of the associated plant macrofossils. The regional component of the pollen data is in sharp contrast to the locally oriented macrofossils. A total of 84 macrofossil taxa and 47 pollen taxa were identified; only 18 taxa were common to both. The low Index of Similarity, 0.4, indica…
