Empédocle – Sur le chemin des dieux
Lions and promoi
In Empedocles, the seers, poets, doctors and promoi of fr. 146 dk , poised for return from exile to the company of the Blessed, no more represent an Empedoclean ideal than do the lions of fr. 127. Seers, poets and promoi are implicated in the anathema of bloodshed; in particular, the promoi (‘battle chiefs’) are ill-suited to a world of waxing Love. As with the other daimones , their exile will last through 30,000 seasons, a sentence that Empedoc…
Aristote, Poétique 1457 b 13-14
In order to illustrate a metaphor of species to species, Aristotle, in the Poetics (1457 b 13-14), quotes two fragments of a poet, without specifying the poet's name. The edition generally accepted of the second fragment, the one of R. Kassel (1965), is re-examined in the light of new data given by Marc. gr. 307 of Theo of Smyrna. One should not read τεμὼν ταναήκεϊ χαλκῷ (Kassel's edition) but τεμὼν ἀτειρέι χαλκῷ. The two quotes found in the Poet…
