The Ecdotic Problem of the Mythographus Homericus
This chapter aims to discuss two questions relevant to a possible edition of the Mythographus Homericus, with special attention to the medieval stage of its transmission: the textual and traditional phenomena occurring within the processes of scholiastic reuse of this exegetical material; and the need to explore the dissemination of historiae in the vast textual tradition of the D scholia
Exegetical dialogue through compilation
At the very beginning of his critical edition of the scholia vetera to the Iliad, Hartmut Erbse endorsed a general distinction based on a criterion, or preconception, of a qualitative kind: ‘scholia, quae in marginibus codicum Homericorum aetatis Byzantinae inveniuntur, in duo genera divisa sunt, quorum alterum Scholia minora vel Scholia Didymi (D) vocatur (quamquam haec ab illo grammatico neque collecta neque conscripta sunt); alterum liceat Sch…

Aristotle, Eratosthenes and the beginnings of Alexandrian scholarship on the Archaia
In his work On the Ancient Comedy, fr. 25 Strecker, Eratosthenes of Cyrene gives a positive appraisal of a metaphorical play on words by the comic poet Cratinus (fr. 54 Kassel / Austin), describing it as εἰς τὸ εἶδος οὐκ ἀρύθμως παίζειν. In this paper, it is argued that this expression, which is in conformity with Aristotelian theorization on metaphor, could also imply an enunciative reminiscence of the judgement given by Aristotle, who held that…
Terpandrean Hypotexts in Aristophanes
Starting from the contest of Aeschylus and Euripides in Frogs , where the author exploits the divergence between the traditional citharodic code and the innovative poetic-musical trends of his time, in order to set forth his critique of tragic drama by throwing the chosen opposing models into high relief (vv. 1248 ff.), the analysis of Aristophanic songs modelled on Terpander's nomoi and specially on the orthios ( Nu. 595; fr. 62 [= 590?] Kassel-…
