The Blackwell Companion to Organizations
Intraorganizational evolution (iOE) is a relatively new, emergent area of research. Although evolutionary metaphors have often surfaced in organization theory, attempts to analyze the evolutionary dynamics unfolding within organizations have been quite sparse and systematic only in recent years. The basic concepts and tools of iOE are thus still in the process of being shaped. As a subject of analysis, iOE is the set of processes through which in…

Using Conceptual Spaces to Model Actions and Events
Actions and events are central to a semantics of natural language. In this article, we present a cognitively based model of these notions. After giving a general presentation of the theory of conceptual spaces, we explain how the analysis of perceptual concepts can be extended to actions and events. First, we argue that action space can be analyzed in the same way as, for example, colour space or shape space. Our hypothesis is that the categoriza…

Conceptual spaces have been developed as a general framework for representing knowledge, including semantics.Already in Grdenfors (2000, Ch. 5), a semantic analysis of nouns and adjectives was proposed. The theory of conceptual spaces has since then been extended to cover also actions (Grdenfors 2007) and events (Grdenfors and Warglien 2012).The main purpose of our article is to show how these models can form a basis for the semantics of verbs. We …
Event structure, conceptual spaces and the semantics of verbs
The aim of this paper is to integrate spatial cognition with lexical semantics. We develop cognitive models of actions and events based on conceptual spaces and vectors on them. The models are then used to present a semantic theory of verbs. \nWe propose a two-vector model of events including a force vector and a result vector. We argue that our framework provides a unified account of a multiplicity of linguistic phenomena related to verbs. Among…

How does preference reversal appear and disappear? Effects of the evaluation mode
Preference reversal is a systematic change in the preference order between options when different response methods are used (e.g., choice vs. judgment). The present study focuses on procedures used to elicit preferences according to an evaluability hypothesis. Two experiments compared joint vs. separate evaluations and explicit vs. non‐explicit joint evaluations. Subjects had to express preferences between high‐variance gambles (HVGs) and low‐var…
