Automated Transcription of Gə'əz Manuscripts Using Deep Learning
This paper describes a collaborative project designed to meet the needs of communities interested in Gə'əz language texts – and other under-resourced manuscript traditions – by developing an easy-to-use open-source tool that converts images of manuscript pages into a transcription using optical character recognition (OCR). Our computational tool incorporates a custom data curation process to address the language-specific facets of Gə'əz coupled w…
The Unfinished Book
This collection is founded on the premise that the physical book is far from exhausted as informational medium, art object, or conceptual resource. The Unfinished Book identifies instead the many ways in which study of books—of their compounding of matter and meaning, their global travels and historical transitions, their shaping of and by new media technologies—remains unfinished business for humanist scholarship generally and literary studies i…

Are The Canterbury Tales a Book
This article offers a new interpretation of the pilgrimage framework for Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. A Companion to the Early Printed Book in Britain, 1476-1558
The history of the book is now recognized as a field of central importance for understanding the cultural changes that swept through Tudor England. This companion aims to provide a comprehensive guide to the issues relevant to the early printed book, covering the significant cultural, social and technological developments from 1476 (the introduction of printing to England) to 1558 (the death of Mary Tudor). Divided into thematic sections (the pri…
Holinshed and the Native Chronicle Tradition
"The Chronicles of England, Scotland and Ireland (1577, 1587), issued under the name of Raphael Holinshed, was the crowning achievement of Tudor historiography, and became the principal source for the historical writings of Spenser, Daniel and, above all, Shakespeare. While scholars have long been drawn to Holinshed for its qualities as a source, they typically dismissed it as a baggy collection of materials, lacking coherent form and analytical …
