Latin Texts on Papyrus and the Study of Classics
This volume gathers 25 chapters focused on Latin texts on papyrus, exploring them from multi- and cross-disciplinary perspectives. It serves as a companion to the texts published in The Corpus of Latin Texts on Papyrus (Cambridge, forthcoming). The chapters provide in-depth analyses of the chosen texts from literary, philological, linguistic, and historical perspectives, or offer methodological reflections on Latin texts on papyrus, promoting inn…
Nigidius Figulus’ Naturalism
‘A frustratingly mysterious figure, though he was a friend of Cicero and praetor in 58’ (Rawson 1985: 94), Nigidius Figulus died in exile, in May or June 45, before Cicero could utter any oratio ad clementiam Caesaris in his favour. Nevertheless, in the extant beginning of his Timaeus (§1 = test. 9 Swoboda), Cicero included a vibrant eulogy of his friend, whose character well suited that of the Pythagorean Timaeus of Locri Epizephyrii. 1

Varron et la constitution des paradigmes flexionnels du latin
In book X of his De Lingua Latina, Varro conceived a mathematical model of Latin inflection. After taking into account the function of mathematics in Roman republican culture, we will show the relationship between this famous passage and the ancient mathematical literature. We will also study the indirect influence of the Varronian model – especially through the occurrences of the technical word formula that defines it – on late Latin grammarians

Gellius and Fronto on Loanwords and Literary Models
This chapter considers the linguistic categories ‘Latin’, ‘Greek’, and ‘barbarian’, with particular reference to the debate in Gellius 19.13 over the status in Latin of the word, nanus (dwarf), thought barbarian by Fronto but proved Greek by Sulpicius Apollinaris. As such, it is admissible in Latin (where indeed it had been used by Helvius Cinna in relation to ponies); but even if not, use by Fronto would have conferred on it a higher standing th…
Varron et Priscien
After analysing the occurrences of the verbs adsignificare (loan translation of the Greek prossēmaínein) and consignificare (loan translation of sussēmaínein) in Varro’s and Priscien’s works, we will focus our attention on the structure of the systems of partes orationis formulated by these two authors. Different parameters are used: vericonditional (subject and predicate of a minimal assertive proposition), semantic (semantic / asemantic constit…
