Performing belief and reviving Islam
This article argues that by successfully performing their belief and ostensibly embodying its effects, western converts to Islam (especially prominent white converts in Reviving the Islamic Spirit conventions held annually in United States and Canada) believe for the rest of the Muslims. In effect they functions as a ‘fetish’. Just as the sexual arousal of a fetishist is dependent upon the presence of a psychosexual fetish, for (some) Muslims the…
The Eighth Biennial Conference of the International Society for Iranian Studies
The Eighth Biennial Conference of the International Society for IranianStudies (ISIS), the largest international gathering of scholars in the field, washeld in Santa Monica, CA, on 27-30 May 2010. Written for the West
The burgeoning cannon of memoirs and fiction written by or about Iranianwomen has saturated the literary scene of post-9/11America. We have seenliterary works translated or mostly written by exiles that entice the curiouswestern reader with Orientalist tales ofMuslim women as veiled, unveiling, powerless victims, or brave escapees of an inherently oppressive patriarchy. The titles and contents of many of these works show that appealing to a specifi…
Text and the Body in a Poem by Simin Behbahani
This paper is a phenomenological study of one of Simin Behbahani's better known poems, “ Raqqaseh ,” which is about the nightly ritualized dance of a dancing girl in a tavern. It will argue that the tavern in this poem could be viewed as a cultural container for socially dangerous representations and impulses, like the metaphoric sexualized body of the dancing girl. The tavern could also be viewed as a semiotic register for the symbolic represent…

Fundamentals of Rumi’s Thought
Is there room on the shelf for another book about Jalal al-Din Rumi, thethirteenth-century mystic of Persia? Considering the great depth of hisgenius, the answer has to be yes. Sefik Can’s Fundamentals of Rumi’sThought is one of the latest books on the subject, and is distinguished fromothers in that its author is the current head of the Mevlevi order, the Sufiorder established after Rumi’s death and based on his teachings. In his biography, the a…
