The Bacchic Gold Tablets and Poetic Tradition: Memory and Performance
In his wide-ranging book, Mark McClay contends that earlier scholarship on the “Orphic-Bacchic” gold leaves has focused too much on their specific religious contexts. He argues, in contrast, that the leaves should be interpreted within the contexts of Greek poetry: its values, communities, and performance. Poetry is defined expansively, including material from Homer to epitaphs to curse tablets. This approach counters the position that the leaves…
Pindar and Greek Religion: Theologies of Mortality in the Victory Odes
Pindar's victory songs teem with divinity. By exploring them within the lived religious landscapes of the fifth century BCE, Hanne Eisenfeld demonstrates that they are in fact engaged in theological work. Focusing on a set of mythical figures whose identities blur the boundaries between mortality and immortality (Herakles, the Dioskouroi, Amphiaraos, and Asklepios), she newly interprets the value of immortality in the epinician corpus. Pindar's d…
Life, Death, and a Lokrian Goddess: Revisiting the Nature of Persephone in the Gold Leaves of Magna Graecia
Ishtar Rejected: Reading a Mesopotamian Goddess in the Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite
This paper argues that the poet of the Homeric Hymn to Aphrodite crafted his mythical narrative in conscious conversation with contemporary traditions surrounding the Mesopotamian goddess Ishtar. The poetic representation of Aphrodite in her encounter with Anchises flirts with characteristics appropriate to Ishtar-personal sexuality, high status within the pantheon, a role as divine patron to mortal kings-only to reject their relevance to Aphrodi…
