Conducting Research Across Cultures: Overcoming Drawbacks and Obstacles
This article discusses some of the methodological and practical difficulties that cross cultural researchers experience in their studies, from the issues concerning understanding and studying other people's culture and separating its influence from that of the workplace culture, to the culture-specific nature of some supposedly universal managerial concepts such as HRM (human resource management) and the choice of appropriate research tools and p…
The Management of International Enterprises
This book addresses major issues related to international enterprises and the world in which they operate from a socio-political perspective. Throughout the work, the author builds a coherent picture
Strategic Development
Brooke (1996, p. 33) defines corporate strategy as ‘determining a sense of direction, a set of objectives, for a company and appropriate routes in order to achieve the objectives [which] ... do not have to be articulated or committed to a carefully thought-out document’. Japanese managers and British culture: A comparative case study
This paper examines the applicability of Japanese management practices in Britain within a socio-cultural perspective. Using a case study research in a Japanese multinational subsidiary in Britain, the paper argues that some management practices are incompatible with British societal and business cultural characteristics and are therefore not adopted by the Japanese managers working in this country. There are some practices which can more readily…

Scaling and convergent validity findings are provided for indices derived from English translations of Performance (P) and Maintenance (M) field measures of leadership used for production employees in Japanese manufacturing organizations (Misumi, 1985; Misumi and Peterson, 1985). LISREL confirmatory factor analyses indicate some weaknesses in the measures ordinarily used. Item analyses using seven items from the Ohio State scales indicate that th…
On the generality of leadership style measures across cultures
It is proposed that cross‐cultural studies of leadership style have failed to distinguish adequately between global characterizations of style and the specific behaviours which leaders need to use in a given culture if a particular style is to be attributed to them. A study is reported of perceptions of electronics plant supervisors in Britain, the USA, Japan and Hong Kong, derived from Misumi's PM leadership theory. The findings indicate that ch…
