A synthesis of health benefits of natural sounds and their distribution in national parks
Significance This study examines evidence of the health benefits of natural soundscapes and quantifies the prevalence of restorative acoustic environments in national parks across the United States. The results affirm that natural sounds improve health, increase positive affect, and lower stress and annoyance. Also, analyses reveal many national park sites with a high abundance of natural sound and low anthropogenic sound. Raising awareness of na…
Elephant behavior toward the dead: A review and insights from field observations
Forward and inverse methods for extracting climate and diet information from stable isotope profiles in proboscidean molars
Plant mineral concentrations related to foraging preferences of western lowland gorilla in central African forest clearings
In the Central African rain forest, mineral resources essential to organisms are distributed heterogeneously. Forest clearings, locally known as bais, attract numerous species presumably due to the mineral richness of these sites, though understanding of the factors drawing species to bais remains speculative. Western lowland gorillas (Gorilla g. gorilla) selectively feed on particular plant species and parts within bais, but studies of such feed…
A Comparison of Social Organization in Asian Elephants and African Savannah Elephants
Accelerated Human Population Growth at Protected Area Edges
Protected areas (PAs) have long been criticized as creations of and for an elite few, where associated costs, but few benefits, are borne by marginalized rural communities. Contrary to predictions of this argument, we found that average human population growth rates on the borders of 306 PAs in 45 countries in Africa and Latin America were nearly double average rural growth, suggesting that PAs attract, rather than repel, human settlement. Higher…
