  • Roman Citizenship of Italian *Augustales. Evidence, Problems, Competitive Advantages

Lindsey Vandevoorde•ARTICLE•Revue belge de philologie et d…•2017•Cited by: 2

The title * augustalis was used during the first three centuries A. D., to refer to an honorary position in local society. It was mostly bestowed on wealthy freedmen who, because of their servile birth, could not partake in the official cursus honorum. Scholars have considered * augustales to be Roman citizens, but this academic consensus is based on a broadly refuted interpretation of only five documents concerning one exceptional case. Although…

  • The Family and the Imperial City

    Lindsey Vandevoorde•ARTICLE•Mnemosyne•2016•References: 5

A freedwoman, Vetilia Egloge, was married to a member of the city council of Mutina. Her son was, however, a freedman with a name identical to that of his mother’s husband, a decurio . This son was appointed as augustalis and apollinaris . • Of Mice and Men. Financial and Occupational Differentiation among *Augustales

    Open Access•Lindsey Vandevoorde•ARTICLE•Cahiers « Mondes anciens•2015•References: 7

  • Respectability on display. Alba and fasti of the Augustales in the context of collegial and magisterial hierarchy

Lindsey Vandevoorde•ARTICLE•Revue belge de philologie et d…•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Much like for other associations, lists of magistrates (fasti) and members (alba) of the association of the * Augustales are preserved, yet research on hierarchies of the (associations of the) * Augustales is virtually non-existent. This paper is an attempt to partially remedy this, based on a limited corpus of exceptional inscriptions from Ostia, Liternum and Trebula Suffenas. More specifically, it is an attempt to trace what this may have meant…
