  • Alexander and the Greeks

Open Access•Ignacio Borja Antela Bernárdez, Borja Antela-Bernárdez•CHAPTER•The Cambridge Companion to…•2024

Alexander’s treaties and dealings with the Greek poleis mainly followed the path set by his father’s military success and diplomatic skills. The League of Corinth, an alliance between the states of the Common Peace with the aim of revenge against the Persian invasion of 480–79 BC was renewed by Alexander just after he became king. But the destruction of Thebes in 335 BC soon showed the Greeks that Alexander was ruthless in his authority, and it l…

  • The Last Tyrants of Athens

The ancient Persians have usually had a marginal space, as symbols of alterity, as a consequence of their traditional opposition with the historical model represented by Greece, in the theories of history and progress. Through a review of the opinion about the ancient Persians reflected in works on the philosophies of history, the aim of this paper is to show that one of the elements of the ancient Achaemenids, as it is their religion, has been p…

On the one hand, we have to see the world in terms of the choices made by these local communities; on the other, we have to remember that Rome was not the only imperialist power [in the East], and that Roman control was fluctuating and incomplete throughout most of the century". 2 In Mithridates VI Eupator instigated a great number of Greek poleis.
