Phenology of a Vegetation Barrier and Resulting Impacts on Near-Highway Particle Number and Black Carbon Concentrations on a School Campus
Traffic-related air pollution is a persistent concern especially in urban areas where populations live in close proximity to roadways. Innovative solutions are needed to minimize human exposure and the installation of vegetative barriers shows potential as a method to reduce near-road concentrations. This study investigates the impact of an existing stand of deciduous and evergreen trees on near-road total particle number (PNC) and black carbon (…
Soil Analysis in Forensic Taphonomy
Introduction
This themed section of Australian Humanities Review seeks to establish the emerging field of 'rural cultural studies' firmly on the agenda of the contemporary humanities and social sciences. This is a timely intervention as rural Australia has featured increasingly over the last decade and especially over the last few years as a topic of national policy attention, public commentary and social analysis. Cadaver Decomposition and Soil
Forensic taphonomy is an applied science with clear aims: Use the processes associated with cadaver decomposition to estimate postmortem or postburial interval, determine cause and manner of death, locate clandestine graves, and identify the deceased (Haglund 2005; Haglund and Sorg 1997). Forensic taphonomy derives these aims from taphonomy, a branch of palaeontology (Efremov 1940). Taphonomy was developed to understand the ecology of a decomposi…
Research and Survive? A Critical Question for Group Analysis
Within the UK NHS (National Health Service) there is an increasing emphasis on evidence based practice in psychological therapies. This article discusses the political challenges and practical dilemmas this raises for group analysis, first by examining questions that might be asked by the principal stakeholders in group analysis as practised within the NHS. Such questions relate to one central issue: `What is the point of group analysis?' and mig…
The Spoken Language Translator
This original volume describes the Spoken Language Translator (SLT), one of the first major automatic speech translation projects. The SLT system can translate between English, French, and Swedish in the domain of air travel planning, using a vocabulary of about 1500 words, and with an accuracy of about 75%. The authors detail the language processing components, largely built on top of the SRI Core Language Engine, using a combination of general …
The Roman Catholic- Methodist Dialogue
THE ROMAN CATHOLIC- METHODIST DIALOGUE David Carter In this contribution, I examine the Roman Catholic-Methodist international dialogue. I attempt to explain its significance, to describe its course and to estimate its achievements to date. Lastly, I will to point to areas for further work. The dialogue began in 1967, in the immediate wake of Vatican II and the creation of the Secretariat for Christian Unity. It began at the same time as ARCIC, t…
