  • The historical development of McMurdo station, Antarctica, an environmental perspective

    Andrew G Klein, Mahlon C Kennicutt et al.•ARTICLE•Polar Geography•2008

McMurdo Station is the logistics hub of the United States Antarctic Program, and localized environmental impacts have accompanied its nearly 50 years of continuous operation. An extensive collection of aerial photographs were used to map changes in the buildings, fuel storage tanks, roads, and physically disturbed areas at McMurdo Station since its establishment in 1956. From 1956 and continuing through the 1960s, rapid expansion of the station o…

  • The late-Holocene history of Gormire Lake (NE England) and its catchment

    Open Access•Frank Oldfield, Rebecca Wake et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2003•Cited by: 4•References: 4

Sedimentary evidence spanning the last 3500 years from cores taken from the centre of Gormire Lake, Cleveland, northeast England, points to two periods of deforestation and catchment erosion. The first, mainly late Iron Age/Romano-British phase, began c. 200 BC and ended c. AD 600. The second began c. AD 1200, the time of early Monastic activity, and continued into the nineteenth century. The chronology for the core rests on 137 Cs, 210 Pb and 14…

  • The Organic Geochemistry of Jet

    Open Access•Simon Watts, A M Pollard et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•1999•Cited by: 2

  • Kimmeridge Jet—a Potential New Source for British Jet

    Open Access•Simon Watts, A M Pollard et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeometry•1997•Cited by: 2•References: 27

Archaeological artefacts identified as jet are often assumed to have originated from the principal British source, which is at Whitby in Yorkshire. Geological samples of jet have also been found within the Kimmeridge Blackstone in Dorset—a seam of oil shale which has been worked since prehistoric times to produce artefacts similar to those made from jet. This paper discusses the geology and geochemistry of jet samples from both Whitby and Kimmeri…
