Simonide e Teseo (Sim. frr. 242, 243, 287 Poltera = PMG 550, 551, 551A)
The paper aims at analyzing three fragments by Simonides concerning thev myth of Theseus and argues that they originally belonged to the same work. The fragments suggest that Simonides was the first to connect the Cretan expedition with the Amazon’s abduction and to emphasize some ideological aspects of the hero, that played an important role in the development of this figure in the Athenian context
The sanctuary of Delphi in Heliodorus’ Aethiopica
Divine and religious elements are an important part of Greek novels. For this reason, my paper aims to investigate the description of the sanctuary of Delphi in Heliodorus’ Aethiopica by comparing it with other literary and material sources, in order to distinguish literary elements from ones more closely related to the historical reality of the Imperial age. The paper argues that Heliodorus’ reconstruction of the sanctuary is in line with contem…
Hermes Iambicus
The present chapter explores the iambic role of Hermes both within and outside iambic poetry, with a focus on the Homeric Hymn to Hermes , which can be construed as the mythical pre-history of the iambic genre, and on the fragments of Hipponax, whose predilection for Hermes calls for an explanation. In both cases, Iambic Hermes emerges as a metamorphic trickster, promoting poetic and linguistic innovation with an unprecedented emphasis on the sig…
Strategies of Communication in Agonistic Epigrams
On the agonistic epigrams the most valuable works are still the collections of Moretti 1953 and Ebert 1972; see also my extensive monograph Nobili 2016. 8 Their authenticity is the subject of much debate and the problem is carefully examined by Bravi 2006; Sider 2007a and 2007b, 5; In the course of this paper I will follow their tendency to consider the epigrams which do not bear overt signs of misattribution Simonidean
Choral Elegy
This paper aims to detect some exceptions to the commonly accepted idea that elegy was an exclusively monodic genre. Pausanias (4.16.6) states that a chorus of Messenian women celebrated Aristomenes’ victory against the Spartans with an elegiac couplet and this is not an isolated case. In the Laconian area the festival of the Gymnopaidia may have played an important role in the widespread use of choral elegies, thanks to some well-known aulodes a…
Mercanti e cortigiane
The new Sappho papyrus containing the ‘brothers poem’ must be connected to the other poems that recount the story of Charaxos and Rhodopis, known from later sources. Doubt arises as to whether it is inspired by Sappho’s biography or draws on conventional topoi. A long and continuous tradition from the Archaic to the Imperial age reports stories of rich merchants who waste their fortunes on greedy courtesans. The topos will be analyzed in terms of…
