The Performance of Expertise
The Spectacle of Expertise: Why Financial Analysts Perform in the Media. By Alex Preda (Columbia University Press, 2023) This engaging volume is ostensibly concerned with the world of finance, financial analysis, and media performance. As an ethnography that draws on observation of television and radio studios and conversations with financial analysts within the context of Hong Kong as a global financial center, it is most surely all of these thi…
Generic Social Process and the Problem of Success-Claiming: Defining Success on the Margins of Canadian Federal Politics
Envisioning success and its pursuit as an enduring feature of human group life, this paper examines success as a humanly constructed and realized social process. As framed herein, success represents the attribution by some audience of qualities associated with achievement, attainment, and/or accomplishment to social act(s) and/or social objects. Consistent with symbolic interactionist approaches to the study of deviance, success is not a quality…

Improvisation as Metaphor: The Sociology of Howard Becker
The Virtue of Patience
Shaffir (1998:63) writes, “We must learn to reclaim the virtue of patience. When we enhance the pace of doing research, it is often at the expense of acquiring a deep appreciation of the research problem.” This paper engages Shaffir’s claim by examining the importance of undertaking a patient sociology. What is the virtue to be found in prolonged and sustained work? How does this speak to the relationships found in field research and in the iden…
Understanding Everyday Life: Generic Social Processes and the Pursuit of Transcontextuality
This paper joins earlier interactionist projects in advocating for an analytical attentiveness to generic social process (GSP). This dynamic form of theorizing is indebted to the thought of Herbert Blumer and the extended phenomenological and pragmatist traditions. Rather centrally, the study of GSPs draws upon the foundational concepts of duration, intersubjectivity, and the self. Such concepts have contributed to some of symbolic interactionism…
Generic Social Processes and the Study of Elites
Deviance, Research Methods
It is, in part, through their methodologies that sociological studies of deviance are distinguished from other disciplinary interests (e.g., biological, philosophical, legal). Questions of method are questions related to theories of knowing: how we claim to know what we know; how we go about the work of supporting our knowledge claims; and how we construct the intersubjective realities we share. The process of doing research is in itself social a…
Considering Essays: The Social Construction of Subcultural Value
The article examines the social processes that accompany the social construction of value within subcultural settings. Taking the evaluation of university essays as the case-at-hand, this paper argues for the importance of attending to the generic social process of assigning evaluative meaning. Specifically, this article locates these processes relative to the themes of: 1) socialization of new academics, 2) contextualizing the essay pedagogicall…

Deviance, Research Methods
It is in part through their methodologies that sociological studies of deviance are distinguished from other disciplinary interests (e.g., philosophical, legal) in troublesome or otherwise offensive aspects of human group life. Questions of method are fundamentally questions related to our theories of knowing: how we claim to know what we know, how we go about the work of supporting our knowledge claims, and how we construct the intersubjective r…
Guest Editor's Introduction: The Intellectual Legacy of Herbert Blumer: Theory, Method, and Contemporary Challenges
This special issue of Sociological Focus is dedicated to the work of Herbert Blumer and his ongoing influence on our discipline and our practice. I trust that readers will find the articles included in this volume of interest to members of the sociological community more generally, rather than Blumer scholars more specifically. Represented herein is a diverse range of voices, perspectives, and conceptual inclinations. All are firmly grounded in t…

The Deviant Mystique: Involvements, Realities, and Regulation
Adopting a symbolic interactionist perspective and building extensively on the ethnographic research tradition, this book analyzes the mystique that often accompanies deviance by examining deviance as an ongoing feature of community life. Because deviance is approached in nonprescriptive ways, as a product of community interchange, the emphasis here is on the ways in which deviance is defined, engaged, and regulated. It is examined as the product…
