  • Introduction to the 50 th Anniversary Issue of Quaternary Research

    Open Access•Derek B Booth, Alan R Gillespie et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2020

Core Vema 28-238 preserves an excellent oxygen isotope and magnetic stratigraphy and is shown to contain undisturbed sediments deposited continuously through the past 870,000 yr. Detailed correlation with sequences described by Emiliani in the Caribbean and Atlantic Ocean is demonstrated. The boundaries of 22 stages representing alternating times of high and low Northern Hemisphere ice volume are recognized and dated. The record is interpreted in…

  • Spatial patterns of Holocene glacier advance and retreat in Central Asia

Open Access•Summer Rupper, Gerard Roe et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2009

Glaciers in the southern Himalayas advanced in the early Holocene despite an increase in incoming summer solar insolation at the top of the atmosphere. These glacier advances are in contrast to the smaller alpine glaciers in the western and northern regions of Central Asia. Two different glacier mass-balance models are used to reconcile this Holocene glacier history with climate by quantifying the change in equilibrium-line altitudes (ELA) for si…

  • Late Pleistocene glaciers in Darhad Basin, northern Mongolia

    Open Access•Alan R Gillespie, Raymond M Burke et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2008

Late Pleistocene glaciers around Darhad Basin advanced to near their maximum positions at least three times, twice during the Zyrianka glaciation (at ∼ 17–19 ka and ∼ 35–53 ka), and at least once earlier. The Zyrianka glaciers were smaller than their predecessors, but the equilibrium-line altitude (ELA) difference was 14 C and luminescence dating of lake sediments confirm the existence of paleolake highstands in Darhad Basin before ∼ 35 ka. Geolo…

  • Evidence for Holocene megafloods down the tsangpo River gorge, Southeastern Tibet

    Open Access•David R Montgomery, B Hallet et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2004

Lacustrine and alluvial terraces and sediments record the extent of at least two Holocene glacially dammed lakes immediately upstream of the Tsangpo River gorge at the eastern syntaxis of the Himalaya. The larger lake covered 2835 km 2 , with a maximum depth of 680 m and contained an estimated 832 km 3 of water; the smaller lake contained an estimated 80 km 3 of water. Radiocarbon dating of wood and charcoal yielded conventional radiocarbon ages …

  • Debris-Covered Glaciers in the Sierra Nevada, California, and Their Implications for Snowline Reconstructions

    Open Access•Douglas H Clark, Malcolm M Clark et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1994

Ice-walled melt ponds on the surfaces of active valley-floor rock glaciers and Matthes (Little Ice Age) moraines in the southern Sierra Nevada indicate that most of these landforms consist of glacier ice under thin ( ca. 1 - 10 m) but continuous covers of rock-fall-generated debris. These debris blankets effectively insulate the underlying ice and greatly reduce rates of ablation relative to that of uncovered ice. Such insulation explains the obs…

  • Evidence Suggesting That Methods of Rock-Varnish Cation-Ratio Dating Are neither Comparable nor Consistently Reliable

    Open Access•Paul R Bierman, Alan R Gillespie•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1994

Using samples from a prehistoric quarry site in the Mojave Desert, we tested and compared the two principal methods of rock-varnish cation-ratio dating, analysis of rock-varnish scrapings (R. I. Dorn, 1983, Quaternary Research 20, 49-73 and 1989, Physical Geography 13, 559-596) and analysis of rock varnish in situ (C. D. Harrington and J. W. Whitney, 1987, Geology 15, 967-970). Because we found no consistent relationship between the varnish catio…

  • Late Pleistocene Glaciation of Mono Basin, California

    Open Access•Marcus Bursik, Marcus I Bursik et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1993

Moraines in the canyons of Mono Basin are separable into relative-age groups on the basis of clast-sound velocities in exposed boulders, moraine morphology, and weathering features on boulder surfaces. Tioga, Tenaya, Tahoe, and Mono Basin moraine deposits each have distinct weathering characteristics and therefore constitute different relative-age groups. The Tioga glacial episode at June Lake may postdate ∼25,200(?)-yr-old basaltic lavas, and th…

  • Late Quaternary Vertical Displacement Rate Across the Fish Springs Fault, Owens Valley Fault Zone, California

    Open Access•Stephen J Martel, T Mark Harrison et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1987

A cinder cone located 11 km south of Big Pine, California, is vertically displaced 78 ± 6 m by the Fish Springs fault of the Owens Valley fault zone. The surfaces of Tahoe-age and Tioga-age alluvial fans that overlie the cone are vertically displaced 31 ± 3 and 3.3 ± 0.3 m, respectively. Neither the cinder cone nor the Tioga-age fan appears to have been laterally offset. The cone is dated by the 39 Ar/ 40 Ar method at 314,000 ± 36,000 yr B.P. (2σ…
